There are also a lot of defects from the factory such as touch-up spots where dabbing paint was used, various scratches, and very hard to remove assembly stickers.
So why 5 stars you ask? Well, it isn't IKEA quality, but it is SUPER cute. My son loves it. I wish they made a fire engine themed one too. I'd go through it all over again just for a fire engine.
Assembly time was 50 minutes and I used a drill with a hex bit and a star (Philips head #1) bit, chuck set to low strength, then hand tightened with included wrench and a screw driver.
As others have said it is a bit small, about 2 feet tall; it is for a child and my toddler son can reach the top shelf and spin the propeller. So it's the right size.
We really wanted a bookshelf for our 5 year old's room but were worried about the 2 year old tipping it over. This is just right. Holds quite a few books -- love the taller second shelf for big books -- and also holds paper airplanes, photos, cars, etc he wants to set on top on the two airplane wings.
The quality is really great for the price. It is so nice to buy something fun and reasonably priced like this and not have it look like a total piece of junk.
This is a PITA to put together. :) Your kid will love it though.
I was worried this might be too babyish for a 5 1/2 year old getting ready to start K. It's very fun and should be appropriate for a couple years I think, at which point we'll buy a more grown up bookshelf for him.
The other bookshelf we were considering was some expensive Pottery Barn thing. We tried this just in case it would work, since it seemed safe in terms of tipping over. What a win! This is much cheaper and a lot more fun for the 5 year old.
Does otherwise seem to be really nice.
assembly gets complicated especially for the top part. Instructions are not proper for last few steps involving wings...
As all their products this product looks great but utility is limited.
