Assembly: there's really two parts to assembly--there's the table and then there's the city. I'm an ikea lover, so I'm familiar with putting stuff together--the table was much easier than your average ikea bookcase. Putting it together was quick and easy (30 minutes for this lady). Assembling the city/tracks took over 90 minutes!! My mom helped. We pored over the instructions and the pictures/video from Amazon. We went to youtube to find videos so we could see different angles. The instructions are only minimally helpful for this, but still essential since they indicate which parts go where--if only each of the tracks were labelled--that would have been really helpful. I'm going to write labels on there for myself for the inevitable rebuild
*Update* Amazon provided great customer service after I notified them of the many broken pieces in this order. To their credit, KidKraft's website allowed me to input my item batch code and then select replacement pieces at no cost (you can literally click on each specific item you need, based on diagrams that match the assembly instructions) so I am waiting to receive those. Note that you will need to provide receipt and photos of the broken pieces, if relevant; keep all the instructions that came with your product; be ready to input all necessary data promptly or the site will time-out and require you to start over from the beginning.
The tracks do not stay together well, expected of course but the funny thing is that there are some tracks that you have to cram together and others that won't stay.
The directions are atrocious! I felt like I bought this at IKEA!
The bridge will probably get put together, taken apart, and put back together correctly. Don't feel bad. There's not a lot of directions telling you the right way.
The tunnel tracks will cause you to throw things. They don't fit.
There is four different angles of curved tracks. Im not sure if you're supposed to use a protractor or what bc I only noticed one curve that was differently.
I got the bright idea to use z-dots to stick things to the table so my 2yr old didn't destroy the track every hour. They didn't work either. Don't bother. I'm still debating whether to superglue.
It'd be nice if the little houses included had an actual place they were supposed to go. As is, you're just supposed to put them willy nilly.
Again, it's not exactly clear from the review but we do love this table. My 2yr old plays with it daily and my older girls (7 and 10) don't complain when I tell them to play with him.
The table is very well made and looks beautiful. It is also VERY big which is great for us - lots of play space on top. One of the best compliments I received was "Oh wow did you buy a new coffee table?" (when we had it flipped to the plain brown tabletop side". Did not look like a train table. My son has used it every day (more like every hour) since we got it for Christmas 3 months ago and it doesn't have a single chip. He is 2, and it should be chipped by now with how he plays on it but it isn't.
I numbered the tracks underneath and now it only takes me about 10 minutes to set it all up. There is one small area of tracks that falls a lot but we are going to fix it with some velcro.
We have the train tracks up half of the time, and the other half of the time the large tabletop printed with the road/grass/water/dirt is perfect for him to play with his Little People, monster trucks, matchbox cars, mini skateboards, Legos and animal figures. He seriously spends most of his playtime using this table in one way or another.
Only thing I am not thrilled with is that the table top is divided into 2 parts so there is a seam down the middle. Not that big of a deal but kinda annoying-looking when you have it flipped to the plain espresso-finished side.
Definitely one of our best kid purchases ever!
UPDATE: 1 Year Later
We have now had this table for almost exactly a year and everything I said originally is still true! It has held up beautifully! Now 80% of the time my son uses the tabletop for something other than trains - usually Legos, Jake & the Neverland Pirates, Army Guys, etc - it is awesome with all the scenery on it especially the water (perfect for the Tic Toc Croc). The train and all parts have all held up perfectly as well. I did easily add tiny velcro strips to several of the curved track pieces and that works perfectly to keep the track in place. The top of the table has a good amount of dings and dents but it would have to be made of concrete not to with how he plays on it, and it really doesn't show because of the scenery printed on it. He uses this table for hours and hours each day - it is where he plays most of the day. I still consider it our best kid purchase.
