KidKraft Ride Around Town Train Set and Table
Young conductors will love playing with the ride around town train set and table. This item takes two popular KidKraft products – an exciting train set and a sturdy table – and combines them into one can’t-miss combination.
The train set allows young boys and girls to explore a whole new world without even leaving the house. The long, windingtrack takes vehicles over water, under a bridge, through a construction area, next to an airport and then back again – and that’s just the beginning of the fun!
One fun thing to do with this set is to ignore the included layout instructions and piece together a new and exciting track from scratch. Should it be a figure 8 design? One big circle? Maybe it’s just a long series of twists and turns, one right after the other? It’s so much fun making those decisions as you go and just pushing the trains along each newly created track.
Parents have always liked KidKraft’s train tables. They keep playtime off the floor and closer to eye level, which benefits both children and their toys. Also, the storage bins help keep pieces together in one central location – and a more organized bedroom is always a good thing.

The KidKraft Ride Around TownTrain Table Set features four scenes, each with its own special touch. With 100 colorful pieces, the train makes it way around a peaceful farm, through a busy construction zone, an airport and a sleepy little town. Passengers wave to the smiling townsfolk as they zip by. A helicopter and airplane pass by overhead. When playtime is done, the whole set cleans up neatly into the removable storage bins beneath the table. Every piece is thoughtfully designed to provide years of imaginative fun.
The young conductors in your life will have an entire community at their fingertips with the fun Kidkraft Ride Around Town Train Table and Set. Made of composite wood products, this set includes 100 colorful pieces such as figures, animals, vehicles, and structures. The set is large enough for multiple children ages three to eight to play with at once, providing hours of imaginative fun. For convenience, a table helps keep playtime off the floor and closer to eye level, while a handy storage bin tucks neatly underneath for a tidy play space.
Board and Track Provide Real-World Setting
Providing a colorful, real-world environment, the Ride Around Town Train comes with a large landscape board setting. This highly detailed melamine-coated board features lakes, bridges, pastures, and an airport runway. There's even an area to place a plastic mounting setting with a moveable crane and working winch.
Designed to link all the areas of the board are a multitude of train track pieces, ranging from straight and curved to inclined. The small wooden track pieces fit together with simple tongue-and-groove connections, allowing for easy, custom assembly. Support beams and bridges make it possible to arrange the track in a raised, crisscrossing configuration for multi-level fun.
Quality Hand-Painted Figures and Vehicles
The Ride Around Town Train offers a variety of colorful pieces to encourage imaginative play. Kids can place hand-painted wooden figures of farmers, construction workers, and doctors throughout town while racing the ambulance, fire truck, and magnetically connected train cars along the track. Sign posts, trees, and farm animals add to the fun of populating the landscape. When it's time to take the fun vertical, an airport with helipad allows kids to fly an airplane and helicopter for jet-setting excitement.
The Ride Around Town Train is compatible with other wooden train sets for added fun. Kids can combine the Thomas and Friends train set, as well as the Brio wooden train set, to create the ultimate bustling community.
Tabletop Setting Raises Playtime off Floor
To keep playtime off the floor, the Ride Around Town Train features a large table for display. Measuring 49 inches long by over 34 inches wide, the table stands 16 inches high so that kids can be closer to the action while sitting. The MDF-constructed board also includes T-molded edges to help prevent chipping while providing a smooth, safe surface for kids to play on. As an added convenience, the Ride Around Town Train comes with a storage bin to house all the pieces underneath the table when not in use.
Our testers found the Ride Around Town Train set to be well-built and fun to play with. Using the detailed, step-by-step instructions, assembling the table required less than 30 minutes to complete. The artisanship and variety of the hand-painted wooden vehicles and figures added a charming touch that seems to be missing from most plastic toys. Parents will likely appreciate the simple, heirloom quality that the set offers while kids will enjoy playing pretend in the various environments.
The Kidkraft Ride Around Town 100 Piece Train Set and Table is backed by a 90-day warranty.

It only took about 20 minutes to assemble and the instructions were really easy to follow. Included is everything you need in order to assemble the table (little allen type bolts and little wooden dowel pegs). It is fairly sturdy and has already held up well even with my son jumping up and down on top of it while we werent looking. It is made from regular particle wood though which should hold up fairly well but is definitely not something that is going to last indefinitely but should provide your child a few years of wholesome entertainment.
The set comes with a train engine and two train cars, an ambulance and fire truck, an airplane and helicopter for the airport, a bulldozer, a truck with trailer (and cargo for the truck), a boat, several figurines (doctor, construction worker, farmer, animals), a couple of buildings (airport terminal and 2d buildings as seen in the pciture), storage bins for all the toys (big plus here as it can hold some of his other toys!). I would imagine that it is compatible with similar train sets as it is about the same size and dimensions that I have seen elsewhere. The tracks are really easy to put together and I have almost gotten to the point where I can rebuild it without the instructions (my son loves to tear this thing a part when I'm not watching him).
I am a little reluctant to give this product 4 stars and am only giving it a 3 star rating due to the following issues: There are quality issues with the veneer (the wood looking part) that covers the particle board and it came with several chips a long the edges. You can even see in their own photo of the product a long the edges where the quality of the veneer just isn't that well. Also the wooden train tracks do not fit together as tightly as I had hoped or as tightly as is seen in the product photos.
In my mind it was a great purchase and the value is exceptional considering similar products with just the train set and tracks costs %40-60 without a table or storage area. It has been one of his favorite toys so far and I'm sure that it will last well over the next 4 to 5 years.
If the product was made from a higher quality material and if the tracks were machined better then it would have most certainly attained a 5 star rating from me but for having cost so much I expected it to arrive in pristine condition and to have been a little higher quality. For the price though it is a good value and there is much enjoyment to be had from this toy.
I love the Roll and Whistle Thomas wooden trains - for $8-15, they are well worth the additional dollar or two over the standard, non-vocal engines (and Amazon sells them the cheapest). I also purchased the singing caboose which plays the Thomas theme and a talking Thomas engine. Annie and Clarabelle were a nice purchase, as they light up while moving, although I admit that my toddler hasn't shown much interest in them. You can accessorize this set with ANY Thomas trains your child enjoys, which is why I love it so much.
In addition to the engines, I was able to work the following accessories (with minimal effort) into this train set (see photos for placement): FP Thomas Lily Pond Fisher-Price Thomas Wooden Railway - Spin and Swim Lily Pond , FP Thomas Search Light Fisher-Price Thomas the Train Wooden Railway Search Light , FP Thomas Railroad Crossing Fisher-Price Thomas the Train Wooden Railway Deluxe Railroad Crossing Signal , FP Thomas signal house Fisher-Price Thomas the Train Wooden Railway Maron Lights and Sounds Signal Shed (note that you can purchase the Christmas/Santa version for about $5 less), and 2 Brio signal lights Brio Light Signal Train Set . I also LOVE the wooden train garage by Right Track Wood Train Track Garage - Fits 5 Cars - 100% Compatible with Thomas Wooden Railway System - By Right Track Toys , and recommend purchasing an additional set of tracks Wooden Train Track 52 Piece Pack - 100% Compatible with All Major Brands including Thomas Wooden Railway System - By Right Track Toys and you will need one female-female adapter to fit the Lily Pond near the existing pond on the backdrop (I purchased a set: Orbrium Toys Male-Male Female-Female Wooden Train Track Adapters Fits Thomas Brio Chuggington, Pack of 8 . The Brio Safari Train is a fun touch as well, especially since the heads 'recline' for going under the tall bridge provided in this set (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GV1AB7Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Obviously, this is a lot of added expense, but the FP Thomas accessories, in my opinion, are top notch and extremely well-priced (especially on Amazon). And if you know what you can use, you can purchase each one at a time and/or ask for them as gifts for birthdays, holidays, etc. I could not fit the storage garage on the table but it fits well underneath (I put an anti-slip rug mat underneath) and my toddler has no problem taking them out and putting them back, rather than being a part of the action on top.
By using these accessories, you will surely lose sight of some of the backdrop provided with this table, and its not a perfect match (my signal crossing sends cars from an off-road position into the 'forest' at the edge of the table) and the Lily Pond partially covers the pond on the backdrop, but my toddler LOVES pressing the buttons and seeing things light-up (especially the search light) and doesn't seem to care about (understand?) the art work provided. My placement of the signal house is not actually connected to the track (improper fit, fittings) and it does modify the track and bridge slightly, but use of SureTrack clips Suretrack Clips 14 Count help keep everything in its proper place AND the track from moving apart - a MAJOR necessity with a toddler. I actually used fun-tack to keep the track down, but be careful because the oils in the fun-tack can cause the paper of the board beneath the set to tear, potentially ruining the backdrop.
I know this review is long, but I hope that it is helpful. I am NOT an expert in wooden trains and I am sure that there are other/better ways to construct this set with these and/or other accessories, but I hope to provide an option for using this table with the Thomas (and/or Brio) accessories, because ultimately that was what I wanted and this table/set provided the ability for me to do that, and I am very, very pleased with the product and hope you enjoy it as much as I am!
For starters, the table took me (a 30 year old woman with zero carpentry skills) 40 minutes to assemble. I did have a side rail upside down that I had to take apart and redo also. Then instructions are simple and clearly marked if you read them correctly.
The track itself, took me one attempt to put it together. I started at the dirt pile and followed the diagram all the way around. Easy peasy. The track pieces aren't lettered but you can count and use diagrams to figure out what is what.
The quality is great as well. The train and cars and crane all work properly and smoothly. The track pieces fit cleanly together. The materials seems sturdy. The buckets and storage area are a huge bonus. I was able to throw our other vehicles and dinos into them as consolidate space.
100% worth the buy. Took me less than 2 hours to completely assemble by myself, with a 3 year old 'helping'.

My only gripe really is I wish the track had adhesive backing or something, kids are a bit rough or clumsy sometimes and the track ends up in pieces. I fixed it myself by hot gluing all the track pieces in place which seems to have dome the trick :)
The storage bins that slide under the table are a nice idea as well, we use them to keep all the small bits that came with the set. Thanks to those storage bins, even after 3 years of play most of the bits have survived and are not lost.
Highly recommend this set, our kids love it and still get constant use out of it in their play room :)
We'll eventually replace tracks with Brio tracks. We bought a brio train and the quailty is superb...it runs well on this "KidKraft" set up
