Fast forward to now. I wanted a extinguisher for my offroad rig. After measuring what I can fit where, I opted for this 4lb unit. I will get a 2.5lb unit to go under the front seat as well, but again, this is one of those circumstances where bigger really is better. I used some steel stock to mock up a bracket mount, used the USCG approved bottle mount found here on Amazon and grade 8 hardware everywhere. I am fairly certain there is no way this is coming off even in a accident (should be a major concern to us with pressurized steel bottles in our trucks), even if it did come off, it would have to work its way out from under the rack, then thru the 1" cargo netting. I feel the passengers are safe. The handle is blocked by the rack support beams so nothing can accidentally fall on and break the top off. The valve assy is all metal so it is very stout as well, perfect for my use, and like everyone hopes, I hope I never need to use it.
Anyways, my husband was grilling on our old wooden, dry deck and I guess he hadn't cleaned the grease out in a while. He opened the lid and the flames got so tall the siding behind the grill caught fire. Luckily he remembered the old owners left this, and luckily it still worked. We had a wimpy baking soda pack that deodorizes the fridge, hardly something that would have put the side of the house out.
Needless to say, we purchased a number of these. One for every floor and one for the garage.
Please remind the new homeowners you know to keep these in their homes. This is just something we never thought about and were prepared this time by luck.
