We bought one of these 12 years ago. Just went to a neighborhood fire safety training session done by local Fire Dept. This model worked great in putting out the fire, after having been stored in our kitchen for 12 years. The gauge showed full charge "in the green" and it was accurate. The fireman directing the event was impressed. He did mention that because these are powder-based, inverting and shaking them occasionally was a good idea. We had never done that and it still had plenty of distance and power to put out the flames. Approximately 12 to 15 seconds of powder spray with a reach of about 6-8 feet. We will be replacing the one we just used with the same kind. Other reviews have dis'd the construction, and yes compared to the industrial / professional units the fireman had, the metal on the handle is thinner. For a home unit, it's fine.

After cooking a grill filled with chicken, we shut off the gas and noticed the fire was growing larger. After another minute we were at the point of a raging inferno quickly getting out of control. Essentially we had a grease fire from the chicken dropping down in the grill. I went and grabbed this extinguisher and quickly was able to put out the fire. It actually only used about a third of the tank and that was overkill to put it out. I am very very thankful that we had this extinguisher nearby. We had it for about 7 years and it was still charged and worked wonderfully.

I have 5 10lb extinguishers, 2 4 lb extinguishers in my house, started with just a 10lb in the garage and the 4lb in basement. 2 years back on July 1st (it was a very dry year) the field behind our place goes up in flame due to a neighbor playing with fireworks. While waiting for the fire department to respond, a person 3 houses down says his garage and carport are on fire. I run and grab the 10lb and start jumping the fences in the backyards. About the time I get there another neighbor having the little 1lb kitchen unit shows up. He jumps around the corner and sprays, for what seemed like 4 seconds and says, I'm out. I jump back there and go to town with the larger unit. I stop the flames from growing due to the field still burning I know it is only time. We are back there about 2 more minutes when it ignites again, I spray a little more and put it out, then a minute longer it goes up again, my extinguisher is now out. I just turned to run to go back to get the 4lb unit when I am hit by a wall of water. The fire department came thru the field to get to the houses. If ever in doubt what size extinusher you need. Go bigger. After that is when I bout the 4 larger 10lb units. And had the original refilled.

Fast forward to now. I wanted a extinguisher for my offroad rig. After measuring what I can fit where, I opted for this 4lb unit. I will get a 2.5lb unit to go under the front seat as well, but again, this is one of those circumstances where bigger really is better. I used some steel stock to mock up a bracket mount, used the USCG approved bottle mount found here on Amazon and grade 8 hardware everywhere.

Feb 2014 edit: I finally used my fire extinguisher!

I had a grease fire under my broiler. Shut the oven off and left the door closed for a couple minutes, but the smoke kept pouring out and seemed to be getting thicker. Grabbed the extinguisher, pulled the pin, popped the oven door open with a broom, and it was out with a single blast. The fire probably would've burnt itself out, but I'd never had an oven fire before so I was panicking somewhat. I'd never used a fire extinguisher, either!

The needle was a bit below 2/3 in the green before using it, not far from where it started. After having sat around almost 3 years, I'm glad this extinguisher worked without a hitch. Thanks, Kidde!

Original review:

I suppose I could set a small fire in my house and see how well this product works, but that doesn't seem like a good idea. So this is really a review on the build quality, and some comments on the shipping process.

Product arrived with the meter well into the green range. As for the extra 1 - 2 days to ship, it's because this is a hazmat item that needs special paperwork that's hand initialed and such. (Mine ended up shipping from some place in Oklahoma that's not an Amazon warehouse, so I guess they contract this out. Took 4 business days from ordering to receiving it since it only ships ground.)

It's solidly built, not cheap plastic like the lower-end Kidde stuff; it has a nice solid heft to it, without being heavy. It comes with a bracket to easily mount it if you want, and slides quite easily in and out of said bracket. Hopefully I won't get a chance to try it out and edit this review!

Apr 2012 edit: Having had this fire extinguisher for about a year now, the needle hasn't budged from where it started; about 2/3 of the way into the green range, just as it arrived. So I'm happy to report it's kept about the same pressure as shipped, at least in the short term!

Needed an extinguisher for my ManCave.

I just bought one of these at walmart. There was 3 of them there and the price tag said $19.95. I went to the checkout and the scanned price was $43! They sold me one at the shelf price.

I bought it due to Amazon review "Dependable extinguisher" and the price. How can you argue with "Rocket Man's" actual experience of using it on a fire and the fact that it was sitting for 12 years and still operable!
The handle seems fine to me and I work with "mechanicals".
Love the fact it comes with a metal bracket. Has metal construction, pressure gauge, solid feel, a BIG sticker to place on the wall (was going to buy a sticker or make one separately and here it comes with one!).
It's also not a throw away... You can have it refilled... although you may pay as much as a replacement?

What more can you ask for?

Remember PASS before you use it.
PULL (the pin)
AIM (at the base)
SQUEEZE (the handles)
SWEEP (move it back and forth)

You will only get 10-15 seconds... so make sure to make the most of it!
