With the use of sophisticated electronic components, the Kidde 9CO5-LP battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm protects you and your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide. Also included is an intuitive slide-out battery door that gives easy and immediate access to the batteries and a safety feature mechanism that makes the unit difficult to close without the proper installation of the batteries. This easy-to-install alarm is appropriate for all living areas and comes with a 7-year life warranty and 5-year limited warranty.

Consumer Benefits

The Kidde 9CO5-LP will alert you and your family with a loud warning signal against the dangers of elevated carbon monoxide levels in your home. This battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm continuously monitors carbon monoxide levels, even during power outages when AC-only units are not providing protection.

Technical Specifications

This unit uses an electrochemical sensor, and when it detects carbon monoxide, it will alert the user with a distinct pattern. The alarm pattern is four short beeps, followed by five seconds of silence, then four more short beeps with a corresponding red LED light. This cycle will continue for four minutes and then change to one cycle every minute until the device is reset or the carbon monoxide is eliminated. In addition, the red LED light will pulse to indicate carbon monoxide has been detected until the device is reset or carbon monoxide is removed from the surrounding area. When there is no carbon monoxide present, a green LED light will flash every 30 seconds, indicating a properly operating alarm when power is present.

I bought this 4 years ago. Put it in the walk-in closet where we sometimes put our baby down to sleep in the basement and basically forgot it was there, with the exception of occasionally wondering if it really does work. Well....this week we found out. The alarm went off in the morning, I pushed the reset button to turn it off (I appreciate that there is a different beeping pattern to indicate low battery vs. dangerous carbon monoxide levels) and the alarm didn't resignal, so I kept wondering if it was a fluke or if I should do something about it. Finally, I decided better to play it safe than sorry given that several of my kids had been feeling tired/headaches the past couple days (could've been coincidence) and called the fire department for advice. They came out and sure enough, we had abnormally high levels in the basement. The gas company came out with more sophisticated equipment and pinpointed our furnace--turns out we had a cracked heater exchange that was emitting carbon monoxide. So thankful we had this detector!

Completely useless, failed to detect leaking furnace

I bought this unit in the spring of 2017 and installed it in my basement near the furnace. A few days ago (just under two years later), the heat exchanger in the furnace cracked and it started leaking carbon monoxide into the basement and distributing it throughout the house. Two CO/smoke combination detectors that I had on my second floor went off, but this unit remained completely silent. The fire department measured 160 ppm of carbon monoxide in the basement where this unit was located, far higher than what they measured on the second floor. After this incident, the test button on this unit confirmed that the batteries were still good, so I have no idea what the problem was. I'll be replacing this unit with something that hopefully works.

Seems to work well, as recently I cooked in our propane fueled stove, and after turning off the oven the detector alarm went off. We then realized that we smelled a bit of propane gas. We could have just gone to bed and had it leaking all night long. But the alarm worked.

One of my carbon monoxide detectors had reached it's "end of life", so I was looking for a simple, inexpensive, replacement that just does its job. The Kidde KN-COB-B-LPM Carbon Monoxide Alarm fit the bill. It costs under $15. It runs on two AA batteries. And it installs in minutes. The alarm is loud, and its features are very basic. You have a test button and a couple of LEDs to show the alarm's status. That's it. If you're looking for a fancy detector loaded with features, this isn't it. If you want simplicity and low cost, this detector will do the job.

Planned obsolence unfriendly

These detectors have a hard life of 10 years. At 10 years, they start complaining, loudly, and need to be replaced quickly. This is unfortunately very frustrating if you are a landlord and have a lot of units. Because like a virus, every one of your tenants start going insane when this starts beeping. And unless you kept careful records of which unit got which alarm when (which I clearly didn't), you will find yourself replacing these every single week as each one conks out unexpectedly, usually during the night and in at least 20% of the cases, when a tenant was away on vacation so the adjoining tenants woke me up to deal with it.

If your unit is going to start failing, have it flash a little bit or behave oddly for a month or two before it starts beeping every 30 seconds. At least there's a chance that the tenant will let you know something is starting to go with the CO detector.

And FWIW, I have no idea if this actually detects. The only time these go off is when the batteries need to be replaced OR we hit the 10 year mark.

The first one lasted from summer 2013 to summer 2018, slight difference in units

The model built, purchased and installed summer 2013 held three (3) batteries. I replaced those batteries once or twice. The unit started beeping even with a new set of batteries so it was time for a replacement. I bought it again and there are a few minor differences. It uses two (2) batteries now and the old back plate still fits but not as tightly as the new one. Since the unit won't jump up three to four inches and fall off I'm using the old back plate. The unit has a 10 year warranty but note I just replaced it. I can only guess what shipping would run and it's easier just to get a new one, the manufacturer is aware of this of course.
