At a Glance Kidde i12040 Wire-In Ionization Smoke Alarm At a Glance: Ionization sensing technology detects invisible fire particles Battery backup for continuous protection in case of power outage (battery included) Smart hush feature silences nuisance alarms Pre-stripped wiring harness with tinned strands 10-year limited warranty At a Glance Features The Kidde i12040 smoke alarm offers a tamper-resistant feature to deter vandalism or theft and a smart interconnect system that connects with up to 24 Kidde devices--including other smoke alarms plus carbon monoxide and heat alarms. The battery-backup feature (9-volt battery included) provides protection even during power outages when many CO incidences occur. It has a large mounting base that helps protect surface paint from dirt and covers imperfections, and its pre-stripped wiring harness has an easy-off cap and tinned strands to increase conductivity. By pressing the hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation. The Kidde i12040 smoke alarm uses ionization sensing technology, which may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to insure maximum detection. What's in the Box One Kidde i12040 120V AC wire-in smoke alarm, one 9-volt battery, and operating and installation instructions. Kidde i12040

There is a very special place in hell for companies like Kidde who put out this kind of junk, whether by looking only to shareholders and not to their products or by simply exporting manufacturing. This isn't a joke, when your peace of mind is at stake.
I am re-wiring to replace with another brand as soon as I can afford it. Kidde has cost me too many sleepless night, terrorized my family, and wasted my hard earned money.
I try to make my reviews helpful and a little funny, but this time I am just at might wits end. Hate is too common in our world these days, but I honestly can say that I hate whoever at Kidde is responsible for this product.
It does seem to have more false alarms than other models I have used, especially as the backup battery weakens. The hush button is only semi convenient, since a ceiling mounted detector is out of reach without a chair or step stool.
I'd also like to address the heath issues of ionization, that people keep bringing up. While there are valid concerns over the efficacy of ionization-based detectors, the idea that the ionizing radiation inherent to them is dangerous is a ludicrous proposition derived from ignorance. The radiation from these is alpha radiation (essentially a Helium atom without its electrons with a lot of energy). It is completely absorbed by the detector. In fact, even the air between you and the detector will absorb it. It only lives over small distances, exactly the situation in which its used in a detector. You have absolutely nothing to worry about from the radiation. The 20 or so minutes it may take to go off in a smoldering fire? That may be worth worrying about.
Thankfully haven't had a fire so no way to be 100% sure that they are effective, but hopefully they are!
