Product Description

Critter was conceived by chance, at the studio of a motion display company called Hankscraft Motors in NYC. It has a godfather called David Dear, creator of the fabulous Duck Mirror, the Rainbow Maker, and many other amazing products. The first four thousand Critters were made by hand, using a vintage Japanese gearbox from the 1950's found at a surplus store. The first place that sold Critter is called Mxyplyzyk, so, between Hankscraft, Mxyplyzyk, and Kikkerland, you get the idea what we're dealing with here. Essentially a no form follows no function object. Body and key colors are assorted, we pick color based on availability. Stainless steel with plastic feet.

WARNING:

CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

Katita - not intended as a kids' toy!

Katita - not intended as a kids' toy!
My (teenage) son was given this after we visited a museum with automata. He wants to be an inventor/engineer, and likes this as a curiosity item and for idea inspiration! The info on the box has clear instructions & maintenance, along with "WARNING: This is not a toy and not for children less than 14 years of age." (No where in the Amazon product description do they include this important information. 3/27/13) Be aware of this when purchasing!

These are creative, well made and apparently too fascinating for my own greedy good. I've bought a batch of these. My grandchildren, who specialize in seeing how fast something can be destructed, keep playing with them and make it clear that grandpa should consider giving them away. I can't resist them, so I do give them away and keep having to buy replacements.

Every one of these I have or had, including those I've given to my demolitionist grandchildren still work. I kind of wish a few would break so they wouldn't be so fascinating to them. These are really decent, quality toys, especially considering the reasonable selling price.

I'll have to hide any new ones I buy, at least for a while, so I can get to play with them!

My 7 year old son got this as a gift from us. He has Aspergers, so loves how things work, gears, etc.. This toy is so cool! It is much smaller than I thought (about the palm of your hand). It also is fragile. Our two year old ripped off one of the legs. But then again, it's not meant for two year olds!! It winds up and bounces all over the place. The only con I have is that it doesn't stay wound for long. I think you get about 10 seconds at most out of the wind up. But it still is worth the buy. I will buy these as future gifts for all ages over 7! Would be a very cool office desk toy!

OH, I should note that it still works great with one less leg! :)

Very unique conversation piece. My kids (9,7 and 2) love it!!

This is a fun little toy. My kids aged 5 and 3 love it. Of course, I supervise, but we talked about counting, how the sparks work and practice taking turns. The sparks are a great effect and they like seeing how it looks different in the light and in a darkened room. The gadget feels pretty sturdy, but certainly would not withstand any physical abuse. I was surprised at how actively the kids engaged with it. The big winding key is a nice touch. It makes it easier for small hands to wind. Incidentally, my adult friends liked watching it as well and began immediately speculating how it worked. It's an interesting diversion at a reasonable price.

I bought this for my 4 year old son and I guess I didn't read the description well enough. We got the "sparky" design and it actually sparks fire. Lol. Pretty cool, but he won't be using it without supervision.

Our boys saw these at a local kid's science museum, and they loved them. They don't get constant play, but both boys (8 and 13) had long talks about how each one moved and why. Every one of these has a different mechanism and method of locomotion, so they're fantastic for getting kids to think about those things. One looked at them in terms of robotics, and the other compared them to insects, topics both of them had recently been studying.
The toys look delicate, but for the most part, they are made with heavy gauge wire and stronger windup boxes than most toys. Our younger son literally ripped the box apart and sent his flying, but we couldn't see any damage, and it has worked fine for several months. Smart, rugged, bizarre designs are awesome for kids. Highly recommended!

I was looking for unusual-type toys which could come from only "Santa's workshop." I bought several of these little wind-up robots, and they were the biggest hit. Two years later, the kids still have/play with them, although the flints sparkers wore out after so much play in the first 6 months or so. Husban replaced them with new flints (like the type for a lighter) but fitting them into the holes was NOT easy and took a bit of determination. Would still buy more of these, and they make a great gift in the mail from that aunt or uncle who always finds the weirdest, cool toys. :)
update--these do NOT hold up to peanut butter. LOL son finally did break the spring, but I would still recommend this toy for a unique, NON-CANDY stocking stuffer or easter basket gift, or birthday party gift, or for an appreciation gift for a science-loving teacher's desk. :D

This wind up thingamagig is so spasmodic and erratically hilarious you'll be holding your stomach! The little guy will remind you of someone you've seen on the dance floor... I may just invest in the rest of the collection because it'll make me the best uncle hands down! BIG little box of smiles for twenty bucks.
