This first McDaniel story does not have any connection to the next installment, unlike other thrillers, except for Sidney McDaniel. It’s an ok story that does inform us that we are increasingly coming under the thumb of the digital oligarchs and their government minions in the cyber world. This story would make a decent grade B movie.

But the way this story was written (in a ‘hurry-up” fashion, seemingly without edits to spelling, grammar, and punctuation) made it read like a first draft written by a pre-teen nerdy geek. Could have been so much better.

I wanted to like this book. But it is really bad, not just as literature, but even as a "tech" thriller. One example: the villain is supposed to be more sophisticated that the NSA, but cannot detect when the hero loads all kinds of spyware and keystroke loggers on his system. And it is stupid to read about how the hero "watched the ones and zeros coming over the line, and designed a new protocol to avoid detection" (not exact quote, but similar). This book does not succeed on any level. I thought it might be one of those books that really pushed an idea about how to "kill big brother", but it is mostly just a rant about how little privacy there is in the information age. Fair enough, but this book is fiction, and it is neither an entertaining nor educative read.
