A doctor (Giacomo Rossi Stuart) arrives at a remote village to perform an
autopsy on a young woman, but his efforts are frustrated by the superstitious
townspeople, who live in fear of the murderous spirit of a ghastly child. Dr.
Eswai exposes the barbaric rituals of the frightened villagers, only to discover
something even more horrifying within the crumbling remains of the notorious
Villa Graps. Made at the peak of his career, Kill, Baby...Kill! is among Bava s
most macabre and visually stylish works, ranking alongside his legendary
Eurogothic thrillers Black Sunday and The Whip and the Body.

The other issue lies in the blu ray's fine print: "derived from 35mm elements." This is code for "not from original camera negative, but an old re-release print which was a dub of a dub of a dub." Consequently, the colors, contrast and clarity are faded and soft. There is also quite a bit of gain, the like of which one only sees in 16mm footage or Techniscope films (where 1/2 of a 35mm frame was used to simulate widescreen).
There is however one reel about 60% of the way through the movie which looks great. Colors are rich, contrast is good and clarity is fine. That only seems to last for one reel (about 8 minutes worth of film) before we cut back to the faded, soft footage.
What a shame Bava's gorgeous art direction can't be fully appreciated here! Had this been mastered from the original negative, the results would have been spectacular. As it is, I am keeping my widescreen DVD of the film, which looks somewhat better than the blu-ray.
