When Maggie Taylor calls her husband to say she is on her way home from work, she is horrified to discover that her two young children are alone in the house, abandoned by their father.
Duncan doesn’t come home that night, or the next. Where he has gone, and why? All she knows is that he received a message on his phone just before he left - a text with a terrifying picture that only her eight-year-old son saw.
And then Maggie discovers she’s not the only one looking for him. Who is he running from?
DCI Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate when a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered, and Maggie begins to realise how little she knows about her husband’s past.
She doesn’t have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him, because one thing has been made clear. Another woman will die soon, and it could be her.
A fast-paced, edge of your seat psychological thriller that will take you on a rollercoaster right to the last page.

Book Description
When Maggie Taylor accepts a new job in Manchester, she is sure it is the right move for her family. The children have settled well although her husband, Duncan, doesn’t appear to be so convinced.
But nothing prepares her for the shock of coming home from work one night to find that Duncan has disappeared, leaving their young children alone. His phone is dead, and she has no idea where he has gone, or why. And then she discovers she’s not the only one looking for him.
When a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered and DCI Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate, Maggie realises how little she knows about Duncan’s past. Is he the man she loves? Who is he running from?
She doesn’t have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him. Because one thing has been made clear to Maggie – another woman will die soon, and it might be her.

The plot is fast-paced and exhilarating, the thinking process of Tom is a high point of this thriller, his calm and composed persona reminds me a lot of famous fictitious detectives like Sherlock Holmes, it's fun seeing how he ties into all of this. It's almost like there're two different stories going on, though all the arcs and subplots tie in nicely at the end.
The writing is most impressive, you can really feel Maggie's fear and desperation seething through the lines, it's strong, compelling and extremely enticing; once you start reading and the plot starts to to pick up, it's near impossible to lay down the book. The biggest plot-wise negative though is Maggie's almost laughable way of dealing with some of the harsh scenarios stacked up against her. At times, the decision she makes is so out of character that it almost feels like she's not a lawyer to begin with. Maybe it's just me but I think she could've handled some of the situations in the book so much better, though she's undoubtedly a likeable character, being charmingly levelheaded and intelligent.
And since there're not really many characters in the book, the "who dun it" gimmick it's trying to pull off kind of gets predictable at the end. The ending is fitting, though it's definitely not as ground breaking as some reviews drummed it up to be. Also, not attempting to look for realism in a crime thriller, but the end does feel a bit rushed and melodramatic.
It's a good read overall, I had fun with the book. But if you're like me, who gets super paranoid when reading thrillers, always consciously picking up hidden clues that may reveal who's the culprit, and in constant bracing for an astronomical AND plausible twist, you will most likely end up feeling disappointed. The critical joints in the book are REALLY up front and obvious, so meticulous and veteran thriller readers might just easily foresee the ending from a mile away (after about 60-70% of reading). For casual readers, however, it's definitely worth checking out if you're into well-written, well paced and intriguing murder mysteries and detective stories.
At last Maggie finally smartens up and starts thinking like an attorney! She comes to her senses at the end and chooses to think for herself. She takes action! I loved the ending!
Great novel! It was part police procedural, part psychological drama, part suspense. It’s definitely a book worth reading, as all Rachel Abbott’s novels are.
Warning: Potential Spoilers
When the main character, Maggie, finds herself wondering who her husband really is, you will find yourself wondering how someone is able to lie the way he did. I was angry that Duncan, also known as Michael Alexander, had the power to pretend as if he was actually innocent. Even when he basically told Maggie that he drowned the four women years ago, he still pretended and acted as if he was innocent. Even though the anger I have towards Duncan will probably remain, at the same time I felt terrible for Maggie because she loved this man-or the image of the man she was given. It was clear that she loved him endlessly because she actually tried to follow with the escape plan, but her own conscious caught up to her and she wasn't able to. No matter how much you want to scream at her for not going to the police earlier, one must remember that it was her husband who she would be telling on-the man who she was married to for a decade and was the father of her two children.

Maggie goes to work at her new appointment on a cold snowy day in January in Manchester, she is a defence lawyer and has a horrible client to defend who kills old ladies. Then whilst struggling home after working late in the horrid weather she finds out that her stay at home husband party time plumber has gone out and left the kids at home alone in the middle of preparing tea, Lilly and Josh. She can't get hold of him she if told that his phone has been disconnected and it's still the same state of play the following morning and she hasn't heard from him and can't contact him. She fears that he has gone off with another woman as she words it. Meanwhile DCI Tom Douglas ex girlfriend has gone missing and he can't trace her either so lots of missing people and then some murders that could be linked to some cases from twelve years earlier and you have the ingredients for a fantastic thriller and as is her talent Rachel is the perfect chief and won't leave you disappointed right up till the last mouthful sorry I mean page.
As you can tell i loved this book and hope you do a well, if you like thrillers then this should be the case that this you'll love it so why not give it ago. 😬

This was yet another fantastic story from Rachel Abbot.
There's so many things that excite me about how it's written; the different chapters written from different characters perspectives. I love how it's set in Manchester, with living near by it makes it even more exciting for me to read of places I see or walk past.
How in every story I am lured into a false sense of security through the main crime and slowly try to piece together the jigsaw puzzle as the team of detectives do it, sometimes one or two steps ahead of them.
Having read almost all of Abbots other novels (all this year) I still love reading how Tom and Becky's characters continue to develop, but most of all I love how I get to 3/4 of the way through the book and try to slow myself down as I don't want it to end. But inevitably I speed read and am not being able to put the book down until the very last full stop. I even missed a gym class and a meal finishing this book it was that addictive!
I can't wait to start reading the next in the series. Keep it up Rachel. 👍🏻😬
Final words...I really think these books should be made into a T.V series. I know many people are missing out on these wonderfully written thrillers because they can't engage in reading. Please make them come to life for all.

DCI Tom Douglas is back again in the fifth in the series from Rachel Abbott, I have a major soft spot for Tom. He’s such a fab character.
Two series of murders, twelve years apart, Tom Douglas see’s the similarities and with ex girlfriend Leo missing and looking like the first victim, Maggie a defence lawyer who’s husband is missing who also looks like Leo and the first victim, Tom and Di Becky Robinson have a race against time to unravel the past and the present and find out what the heck is going on and who is involved.
Rachel Abbott has a way of writing a story that you can’t put down. Each book has been a page turner and I’ve found myself reading into the small hours. This book is full of twists and turns, it’s action packed and tells a complex story. The characters are all well formed and intriguing and you can’t help feeling mixed up in the plot. Kill me Again left me breathless and wondering if the people we think we know really are what we believe?
I highly recommend Kill Me Again and this could be read as a stand alone book but its a great series and I think you would benefit reading them all in order.

Anyone starting to read these, it is best to start with book one and get to know the characters. Great crime books.

The chills were keeping me awake throughout the night to keep reading. The connections of some murders happened twelve years ago, coming up in certain chapters were brilliantly laid out. As a reader, it intrigued me. It has also showed me who Tom Douglas, the Police officer on the cases, was. Like an old friend, a conscientious one, for whom you wished to know him more. And his sidekick, the fiery Becky Robinson.
Everything about this novel is superbly crafted. Unputdownable? Yes. This is truly a gem of a thriller. Read it now.
