Charlie Rhodes’ life is in turmoil. Her relationship with her boyfriend Jack is going well but Casey, the newest member of the Legacy Foundation, has dropped a bombshell and Charlie feels as if things are spinning out of control. While waiting for DNA results to prove (or disprove, for that matter) Casey’s identity, the team gets called out on a weird case.
It seems sadistic clowns with magical abilities are killing people in the suburbs surrounding Nashville, and the deaths are bloody and horrible. Upon arriving on the scene, Charlie and Jack stumble across an entire cadre of clowns hanging out at the fairgrounds and the game is afoot.
Mystic Caravan Circus isn’t what it appears to be on the surface. Poet Parker, second in command for the circus, is front and center as Jack and Charlie start digging for answers. It seems both sides are keeping secrets, though, and discovering the truth isn’t going to be easy.
Charlie has always zealously guarded her supernatural secret and it seems she’s not the only one, because the moment she crosses the threshold to the circus she senses she’s surrounded by a magical group of otherworldly individuals.
Trust takes time but that’s a precious commodity as the clowns ramp up their attacks. It’s going to take everyone working together to figure out what’s happening … and who is behind it.
Poet and Charlie make a fearsome twosome but they might not be enough to take on this particular threat. Everybody hates a clown, and when this trio declares war, the horror that follows will haunt an entire city.
Charlie is determined to deal with the clowns before focusing on her personal life. She has to survive to find answers, though, and it’s going to take every ounce of power she has to come out safely on the other side.

I will start by saying that the Charlie Rhodes series is not one of my favorite Lee series. The Charlie character is just too much of something. Juvenile? Moronic? Love-starved?

I understand you have to have some love interest, but the whole Jack and Charlie relationship just doesn’t ring true. It’s more of a teenage fantasy of what a relationship is supposed to be. Nothing comes across as real to me. Maybe that’s fair since it is a group searching for the paranormal while unknowingly having a paranormal in their midst. Each of them are naive creations and don’t seem to grow up beyond a childish representation of what each of them are. All surfaces, no depth.

I did like that we finally found out what Charlie’s genetic background is, at least so far as what her family claims. She’s obviously more then Witch, Mage or whatever else including Warlock, since that is supposed to be a male only line.

The crossover using the Mystic Caravan Circus was ok, but I feel like that is all the author is doing anymore. Crossovers between her various series. It’s getting to be extremely overdone. Just because Marvel has made it a thing, which truthfully they’ve been doing since the 60’s, and doing it better, doesn’t mean every writer has to follow in their footsteps.

I really enjoy the Mystic Caravan series, so that is the only reason I wasn’t totally put off with the story. The thunderbird mythos was an interesting angle. I feel it was explained well and in some way utilized reasonably well. I do think adding Fred and Toby to the thunderbird lineup didn’t work very well though. Yes Waya was good, but did evil things he couldn’t control after turning. That the two men just fell through the wards and were turned into thunderbirds seemed ridiculous. Waya was only turned due to a crossroads demon deal. Shouldn’t the two men have needed access to that level of magic to turn into thunderbirds as well?

I read a lot, usually the Lee books take a day or day and a half to read, which is the only reason I read the Charlie Rhodes books along with all of her other series. When you read as much as I do, sometimes you read just the ‘ehh’ stuff to fill the time, so you can occasionally be surprised with a good one. This one was not one of the better ones though, even with the unique thunderbird story. It could have been though, if the characters had a lot more depth to them.

I am all for female empowerment, but each heroine from each of the various series can’t each be the embodiment of the most powerful (insert paranormal type here). Can’t the character still be underpowered but knows how to use the power they possess to its best ability? Or research enough information so they know the villains weakness and can exploit them that way? Plus if each series has the strongest person in it, then wouldn’t the odds also create a situation where one of them may not be on the side of good and all that is right in the world? Or a villain would search them out to up their own status by taking out a super-powered do-gooder?

Also, please just get rid of Laura. Her sniping and ridiculous behavior would never stand in the real world, even in a job where her daddy got her the position, unless she worked directly under that nepotistic nightmare. She’s a ridiculous caricature of a person and after a couple exposures to her joke of a personality, it’s time to have her move on. Hostile work environment indeed, now end her.

It was hard to get through this book. Again, I love Ms. Lee's ideas but the story gets lost in the unrealistic sugary cuteness between the couples, their constant need to reinforce their feelings (too gooey and lovey dovey at times), and in this books' case the constant reminder that Jack and Kade hate clowns. Ugh, this was brought up so many times it was exhausting- Jack, Kade, they are clowns, grow up and get over it!!! There are quite a few discrepancies in this book, isn't Charlie supposed to have majored in Parapsychology and paranormal phenomenon? How come she doesn't even know what an elemental is? Why is Poet giving the so called educated individual paranormal lessons? I don't have Charlie's degree and I know what an elemental is (or what an elemental would be). The book mostly focuses on Charlie, Jack, and their new found friendship with the Mystic Caravan Circus. What about The Legacy Foundation, this is Charlies book and yet we hardly even have any interaction with the Foundation characters. I miss Millie, I miss Chris' enthusiasm. If you were also hoping for additional answers regarding Casey and Charlies' past...well you will have to wait until the next book. There is absolutely no closure or no answers regarding this development at all with one exception (I wont ruin it for you). I wanted a little more closure or a little more to Casey's story. There is a suggestion that Charlie is too powerful and poses a threat to the family, hence why she was abandoned. However, I never see a mad rush of power for Charlie - her powers exhibited so far have only been so so. Are we still waiting for a magic awakening because I don't see it,are we waiting for her to mature? - this may be the case as Charlie is a little to petulant at times. As with all of Ms. Lee's series they start out with great potential and I can't wait to read the next one, then by book 5 or 6 I am done, I lose interest, and I would rather do the dishes or pull weeds than read.

We follow Charlie and Jack and the Legacy Foundation to Nashville where some bizarre thefts and murders have taken place. The only thing security cameras have picked up is video of a crazy clown at one of the thefts.

The murders are proving hard to analyse with weird wounds at the victims necks and abnormal splatter patterns. The biggest concern for the police, however, is trying to link it to the circus that just so happens to have come to town.

Mystic Circus are also trying to work the case. So now there's three teams and some paranormal overlap as Charlie finds Poet and the motley circus crew she leads. Charlie's focus is being divided by the situation with Casey.. she's not sure what she wants to do and now Laura is accusing her of trying to steal him away because she couldn't find him Charlie wasn't with him but Laura's all about the hate! All Charlie wants is to hide away with Jack and forget about it all.

Fantastic, even though it was clowns.. coulrophobia is challenge with Mystic Circus tie ins.. we're finally uncovering more of Charlie's story and now I am desperately wanting the next book!! I hope it's coming soon!!

Charlie and Jack along with the other members of the Legacy Foundation have been called in to Nashville to investigate a case where Clowns are breaking into houses and killing people. While investigating they come across a circus full of clowns. The Mystic Caravan Circus which you may know from another series written by Ms Lee. Poet, Kade, Luke and the others in the circus are aware of the clowns and what is happening in Nashville but have so far been unable to ascertain what sort of supernatural beings they are dealing with. When Charlie, Poet, Jack and Kade have a run in with the clowns the women are disheartened to discover that their powers are totally ineffective. This has never happened before Poet has faced off to innumerable supernatural enemies and never before have her powers failed her. This makes their enemy a danger they may not be able to deal with and all the while people are still dying. This is one of the best in the Charlie Rhodes series a great mysterious enemy and new allies in Poet and the circus crew. Lost a star as I felt that in the ending the clowns defeat was a bit too easy. But still a very enjoyable read.
