Editorial Reviews

A cast of Poland s most popular contemporary actors highlights this action comedy, which became the biggest hit in that country s history.
Beloved comedy star Jerzy Stuhr and director Juliusz Machulski (Kingsize; Sexmission; Deja Vu) team up again in this entertaining send-up of action films. A hapless taxi driver is mistaken for a contract killer and arrested by police. It all started because the taxi driver s name is Jurek Kiler, and kiler is the word for hitman in Polish. After the mob helps secure his release from jail, Kiler becomes seduced by his new identity. Stuhr stars as the detective determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, while popular actor Cezary Pazura plays Kiler. The big-name cast is rounded out with action star Marek Kondrat and the recognizable faces of Jan Machulski and Jan Englert.

Poor Jurek Kiler (Cezary Pazura). He was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong gun in the trunk of his taxi. Now he's staring down the barrel of a gun, son of a gun, accused of being "Killer," the toughest assassin in Poland. He's been nabbed by Inspector Fish (Jerzy Stuhr), a relentless, if slightly bumbling investigator. Fish is the hero of the department for all of a day before one of Killer's employers, the hirsute gangster Siara (Janusz Rewinski), busts him out of custody and hires him for a few new hits.

Everyone, it seems, has someone they want murdered. Even the local greengrocer would like her husband laid to rest. Siara has his sights on his business partner, Lipsky (Jan Englert), and snooty investigative reporter Ewa (Malgorzata Kozuchowska). Like Inspector Fish, Ewa won't hear that Kiler is anyone other than "Killer" but, luckily for viewers, there's no twist at the end to reveal that the hapless Kiler is anything but what he claims to be.

This isn't The Usual Suspects: what could be a typical mistaken identity flick is elevated thanks to a clever self-reflexive script by Piotr Weresniak that has cab driver Kiler making a stop at the video store to see how Bruce Willis, Jean Reno, and Robert De Niro handle a gun. Completing his hitman persona, Kiler dons a suit and skinny black tie to look like a refugee from Reservoir Dogs or A Better Tomorrow II. Kiler also benefits from an intricate plot that initially recalls Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown but without the obsequious stylistic embellishments and with far greater viewer satisfaction.

Director Juliusz Machulski has an outstanding track record, having helmed classics like Sexmission and King Size. Owing to the success of Kiler, Machulski followed the film with an obligatory sequel which tries and almost lives up to the fun of the original.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can get a person into trouble, so can being framed for a crime one did not commit. "Kiler," one of Juliusz Machulski's best comedies, is a story about a taxi driver that is set up. The taxi driver is named Jurek Kiler (Czeary Pazura) and is blamed for the slayings committed by an assassin.

The police do not believe the taxi driver, with the last name Kiler, is not the Killer they were searching for and imprison him. Jurek uses the tough reputation of the infamous killer, along with a lot of dumb luck, to his advantage in gaining the respect of the other prisoners.

As if things are not bad enough, a mobster frees Jurek from prison. In return for the favor, the mobster wants Jurek to kill a politician. Jurek doesn't want to kill anyone but his new friend doesn't fool around. With the help of a TV reporter, Jurek Kiler tries to untangle himself from the mess. How Jurek has to use his wits to get free makes an interesting story. Furthermore, it realty looks like Kiler has a lot of fun pretending to be the famed hit man.

"Kiler" is top rate because it has a complex story and stars several of the best Polish actors. To name just a few, it has Jerzy Stuhr, Marek Kondrat and Katarzyna Figura. Furthermore, Czeary Pazura, who has starred in many of the best Polish comedies in the last 20 years, plays Jurek Kiler. Pazura is a fine actor that can be hilarious as well as serious. Without a doubt, the actors make this movie funny.
