Its rare for me to feel so hyped for an MP3 album, particularly one for a videogame soundtrack at that. But that just shows how talented Mick Gordon is. His work on Killer Instinct season 1 has been nothing short of fantastic and the release of the season 2 soundtrack most definitely continues that trend.
1. I'm Back (To Rise!) 9/10 - TJ Combo's theme is seriously catchy! I'm not big on rap but Omega Sparx's performance is great as is the lyrics, which details Combo's fall from fame and his desire to go legit and prove himself to the world. We also get Combo's idle theme (the music that plays when both fighters do nothing for a couple seconds) which adds a lot to it. I should point out that all the season 2 characters have their idle themes incorporated into their tracks which is awesome. These were noticeably absent from the season 1 soundtrack with the exception of Sabrewulf's theme.
2. Village of Whispers 8/10 - KI's resident ghost girl Hisako has a suitably creepy but groovy theme. The lyrics are in Japanese but I feel it adds to the song even more. This track has a supernatural vibe all over and the idle theme is haunting. A solid theme that fits Hisako perfectly.
3. Inferno 11/10 - This is hands down THE character theme I was most looking forward to when I saw Cinder was announced as one of the fighters coming to season 2. Trailblazer was an awesome track from KI Classic and I wondered if Mick could match it. He does...and surpasses it. Its really one big remix of Trailblazer but faster and more intense and I couldn't be happier. LittleVMills guitar work is also noteworthy. Listen to it and love it.
4. Temperance & Vengeance 10/10 - Wow, this song sounds almost completely different than whats been heard in the game and I gotta say, it blew me away. Its a lot more techno with the original instruments seemingly being overshadowed by synths and I don't mind it in the least. And that idle theme...man I could listen to it all day. Definitely one of the best tracks.
5. Polemos 10/10 - This theme SCREAMS power and epicness. Its even more amazing when you find out that a choir of 461 crowdsourced voices was used for the Greek chanting, which happens to include the entire Iron Galaxy staff, several from Microsoft, and others. An excellent track all around and very befitting for a war golem.
6. Sandstorm 8/10 - A solid and sinister track with a Middle Eastern vibe thanks to the instruments used. A good theme that matches the character of Kan Ra.
7. .execute 6/10 - Another track that sounds quite different from whats heard in the actual videogame. The big change is that the main KI theme can be heard throughout the song. Its an improvement but even then, I'm not too fond of this track. This mostly has to do with me not liking the whole "drum and bass" genre. Its a great fit for Aria though.
8. Hatchery 09 5/10 - Eh, definitely the "worst" song in the whole album. That's not to say its a bad track by itself, but by KI standards its really not that memorable. It would fit right in a Jurassic Park movie and not much else. Its a shame because Riptor's classic theme "Rumble" was great. Unfortunately this doesn't hold a candle to it.
9. Herald of Gargos 10/10 - Holy hell, this is definitely the most intense track of the bunch. I'm not a fan of death metal, but Mick Gordon definitely has me intrigued in the genre thanks to this song. Its a faster version of Jago's theme Tiger Warrior but instead of throat singing, its been replaced by metal-style screaming and it is mind blowing. You also get a pretty chill guitar track of the main KI theme near the end, but that's after waiting for about 2 minutes of silence when the song itself is done. I thought the silence was unnecessary and should have been shortened considerably. Still though, this is another contender for best track in the album.
The rest of the album consists of the entire classic Killer Instinct 2 soundtrack (and a few unreleased ones here and there) which makes this value even more crazy. So yeah, fans of the series who really dig the music have probably bought the season 1 album, so this purchase would be a no-brainer for them. Gaming enthusiasts that like videogame music in general should also consider buying this. Its just that good. Now bring on season 3!
