Tedious: As usual the book is padded with waaay too much historical information on New York, this time specifically the garment district and fashion industry. Honestly, if I wanted to know about American history and to be talked at, I’d sign up for a class somewhere.
Annoying: I’ve read all the books in this series and really don’t recall Mike being as condescending & arrogant in the earlier books that he has become in the last few. I know that his remarks are supposed to be non-PC banter but it comes across as condescending, at times close to bullying and even just plain nasty. Alex seems to have gone from a strong, intelligent woman to a simpering, whiny, clingy school girl. The fact that, rather than telling Mike to pull his head in. she defies him and goes behind his back just reinforces that impression, she’s like a teenager defying her parents.
Improbable: Alex isn’t actually supposed to be involved in this investigation but keeps inserting herself in it, at the same time putting other people jobs and careers at risk, which apparently is less important to her than satisfying her own curiosity and feeding her own ego. She wanders into the Metropolitan Museum whilst a fashion show is being set up. On being told that she can’t enter she says that she’s a friend of the family of the designer, so everyone just takes her at her word and gives her free reign to wander wherever she likes. Really?? During her wanderings she happens to meet a young woman who knows all sorts of inside information about the dead designer, his family & the inner workings of his company and she is only too happy to blab it all out to a total stranger. Oh, give me a break.
I almost gave up on this book at 50% but decided to stick with it, at 85% I really couldn’t care less about any of the characters or who did what to who and don’t know if I can force myself to finish it.
