About the Author
Shannon O’Neil is a native of St. Augustine, Florida, but her Southern roots run deep in the kudzu and clay of Lower Alabama. A proud Florida State University alumnus, Shannon is also the author of I’ll Be Home for Peacemas and A Complicated Christmas, both available on Amazon. She currently resides in St. Augustine with her favorite beach companion, Bucky, and draws inspiration from the cobblestone paths, sandy shores, and literary history of the Nation’s Oldest City.

The characters are diverse and likeable. In addition to the key players, several quirky characters round out the cast to add color and authenticity to the book's small-town setting. I particularly appreciated how the author revealed their backstories, opting to slowly leak the necessary information as it became relevant rather than devoting page-long passages to describing historical events.
The author did a fantastic job blending in the Fanconi anemia element of the story. From the foreward and back matter devoted to this little-known disease and the Kidz1stFund.com non-profit, I take it raising awareness of FA was one of her main goals. Yet, the real-life FA information included in the narrative feels appropriate and minimal rather than hijacking the story into a platform to preach awareness.
The core premise is creative, although the actual mystery aspect doesn't really appear until two thirds of the way into the book, making it difficult to accurately classify KILLER SHINE as a mystery. I would have preferred if the description hadn't alluded to a particular event (which I won't mention in case the author opts to modify her book description). My advance knowledge led me to think "Oh, finally" when the event did eventually happen, whereas I believe I would have been more intrigued by the plot twist if it had been unexpected.
O'Neil is an excellent storyteller. KILLER SHINE will likely appeal to anyone who enjoys a cozy small-town story centered on family and community.
Review disclosure: I won a free paperback copy of this novel in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
Ms. O'Neil's characters are deep and her settings rich. Definitely a page turner and easy read. I look forward to reading more from this new author!
GREAT JOB SHANNON--HOPEFULLY THERE WILL BE ANOTHER BOOK SOON!!
