Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I have always enjoyed watching people and studying history which is, after all, an account of things people did over time.  Ancient societies may be far separated from us by time, but if you read the words and accounts of everyday people, it's as though you're reading a letter from a friend.

There was a town of artists who constructed the tombs of the kings and nobles outside Thebes.  Their very nature - a collection of artists - made them singular; their town has been fairly well preserved and there are some excellent books about them.  I was fascinated by the scandal of tomb robberies in the late XXth Dynasty, and more so because the tombs robbed had been constructed by these workers.  How would they have reacted to the scandal?  What would they have done?

This story arose from those speculations.

A Killing Among the Dead. is the last book of the Memphis Cycle.  It is based on a terrible scandal of tomb robbery and corruption that occurred in the late XXth dynasty, 150 years after Ramesses the Great.

This story is different from my others, no matter what era they are set in.  It is shorter, and it is limited in its scope.  Though other characters make appearances, they are peripheral. The story only concerns Wenatef's actions over the course of perhaps two weeks. There is no scope for character development, except for that of Wenatef himself.  The conflict is set.  People seem either to love it or hate it.
I enjoyed writing A Killing Among the Dead: the story touched me.  It is a fitting close to the Memphis Cycle
