I will be brutally honest: I read the first chapter to this book and almost stopped. It seemed like a comedy of sorts, but kind of a DARK one. I decided to read just one more chapter to make sure-- and am I glad I did! It took off and I had to pace myself because I didn't want the fun to end too quickly. Most books relax me before bed and make it easier to sleep. This one kept waking me up more with laughter and and drop jaw reactions, making it hard to sleep afterwards. I don't want to oversell it because one of the reasons it was so exciting for me is that I had few expectations going into it. I only read it because I was familiar with the author (Allan Prell, the famous Baltimore radio talk show host). Allan had a very quick wit on the radio, and I was curious if he could write near as well. The answer is: no-- he writes MUCH better. "The Killing of Andrew Mybull" is a nostalgic and hilarious look back at Fly-over country in the mid 1900s. If Mr. Haney did a spin-off from "Green Acres," it would produce this kind of guilty pleasure. It's filled with lovable scoundrels you're going to delight in meeting... but at a safe arm's distance. Prell takes things right up to the limit of disbelief, then pulls back and plays with your imagination like a yo-yo. But he builds on a basis that is authentic and true, and it's like taking a time machine back to world that no longer exists. I love giving this book to friends. I know they are in for a real treat and I envy all first time readers of this story. Perhaps the only thing I can look forward to about growing old and senile is eventually forgetting enough to be able to re-read it without remembering the plot. It was one of my favorite reading experiences and if you enjoy oddball humor, you'll love it, too.
