Product Description

The original soundtrack of Danish hit crime series The Killing now available for the first time on CD and MP3! The release ties in with the premiere of season 3 on BBC4 and Danish TV in September. The music of The Killing, composed by Frans Bak, has been described as one of its key success factors evocative, haunting and characteristic it has a strong presence throughout the series. Riding the popular wave of Scandinavian crime drama, the EMMY nominated and BAFTA winning series The Killing has become an international TV sensation. Baks music has helped to lift [The Killing] from being merely an excellent television series into an unforgettable event. --Adam Sweeting

I am surprised to be the sole reviewer for this music. I really enjoyed the American version of the TV series, just fantastic (yes, I know, I hope to see the Danish original). But by the third or fourth episode, I realized that, as well as the excellent filmmaking and acting, the soundtrack was also a very important aspect of the flow of this series.

As I listen to Bak's scores, of course it reminds me of the series. But more than that, the music stands on its own. And although the series could be quite dark at times, the music is not only dark, it has many different moods. There is a quiet meditative quality to some of these pieces, and then certain pieces move with slow, steady, percussive, melodic lines. Great stuff.

I enjoy Eno's instrumental music, and there are moments where you could say the mood is "ambient." Frans Bak works builds and repeats melodic lines in very subtle and well-structured ways. The music is by turns suspenseful, calming, frightening, and just stunningly beautiful. One of the vocalists, Swedish singer Josefine Cronholm, performs with Bak. Bak says she sings like an angel, and I would have to agree.

I have never understood the television industry's reluctance or indifference to making soundtracks available for shows that fans really like. It's almost an afterthought for most of them, and I think they miss out on a great secondary revenue stream by not producing soundtracks that include all of the music for their respective shows. Some do, but only sporadically, and they often leave out the short instrumental pieces that 99% of the time are real attention grabbers.

Such is the case with Vena Sud's "The Killing". While they have a music page, they don't bother with the instrumental tracks - most conspicuously absent is one of the staples, the title track by Hans Bak. They do make a big deal out of telling you who does the show's opening theme, but they don't offer it anywhere sale. Again, I think this is a missed opportunity. Someone somewhere needs to pick up the ball here and run with it. How hard would it be?

Now for the review of this one, which only covers the Danish version of the show. One of the most notable things for me about the American version of The Killing (the only version I've seen) was the incredibly effective use of music to match the story and the setting. I, like many, had of course visited the show's site at AMC to read up on and learn more about the music, but never saw a soundtrack listed; the American version uses a mix of singers - some well-known, some not as - but it was the instrumentals that I thought really made the mood work.

By chance, I did a search for The Killing Soundtrack, and that led me here. The first thing I did was read the review above (nice job, S. Macdonald - you're not alone here anymore) and he's right; this is exactly what I had hoped to find.

Just like the Danish series, the soundtrack music conveys a moody and almost sinister aura that might not appeal to all. However, if you are a fan of the show, this music brings that feeling right to the surface. You won't find yourself whistling any of the cuts, but it is a great audio backdrop to sitting in front of the fireplace with a snifter of brandy.

The instrumental is nice, however it gets old fairly quickly. I was hoping for some of the songs from the Netflix series that had vocals to them. One in particular was in the final episode. It was a female singer and beautiful. I have been able to find some of the vocalists, however none of them are on this CD. I think it would be fair to say that this CD is not the soundtrack to the Killing, in its' entirety.
