Prior to this invitation, I had never heard of this author or book; but, if I had known how much I was going to enjoy Killing Instinct, I would have found time to read it earlier. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that after reading the first 100 pages or so at one sitting, I downloaded and read Darcia Helle's free short story, "The First Kill" and then purchased her first two books in this series online at amazon.com too--"No Justice" and "Beyond Salvation."
After ordering the earlier books, I dived back into this unique character driven thriller, plowing through it in record time. I was intrigued from the onset when I learned that a couple of contract killers were the good guys in this mesmerizing tale.
Michael Sykora is a computer geek who hires hit man Sean Riley to find the person responsible for his wife, Christina's murder and ends up going into business with Sean bringing vigilantly justice to perverted and murdering scums who have otherwise escaped their just due.
Michael's lover, former prostitute, Nicki, his street smart assistant and trusted employee has her own crosses to bear.
As a child, Sean Riley, after watching his abusive father murder his mother felt no remorse for his young adult roll as a mob enforcer turned murderer for hire while leading a double life as soon ex-husband to Jillian and ex-father to their two year old toddler, Anthony.Read more ›
Consistent character development, nice follow-up to "No Justice" and "Beyond Salvation", occasional humor and great action. I recommend reading all three Sykora books for better continuity and flow.
The other thing that impressed me about this is that it's a pretty grisly novel written by a woman, and it's not girly at all. The women are the sort of women I want to read about. The guys are alpha males. This is actually the fourth in the Micheal Sykora series, which I didn't realise until I was a little of the way in, but it's very neatly executed so it reads perfectly well as a stand alone. One of the elements that makes it so very readable is that the dialogue is terrific - always appropriate, realistic, sharp and sometimes amusing. I'll definitely be reading more of these books (starting with No Justice, which I believe is the first), and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good murder thriller and isn't too squeamish!
Sean and Mcihael provide their own service in that they are both private investigators and hitman for hire (note: they only kill bad people). They soon realize the type of organization that Sandman is behind and know that it will take careful planning and determination to have a chance to bring the Sandman down.
I really tried to like this book a lot more but it reads a lot like a low budget action film. The two seem like a team-up from the old 1970's films like the ones that would star Jim Brown and Fred Williamson. The author goes overboard in descriptions of torture and revenge. You wonder how they can remain under the radar from both the police and the bad guys.
It is scarry that such an organization as Morpheus (Sandman's organization) could exist and based on the way it is portrayed it is probably based on something real (think the underground fights in garages portrayed in the movie Lionheart). The book does try hard to keep the reader engaged and some of the book is well written but the overall plotting is just too weak to give it more than three stars.
