From the bestselling team of Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard comes Killing Reagan, a page-turning epic account of the career of President Ronald Reagan that tells the vivid story of his rise to power--and the forces of evil that conspired to bring him down.

The basis for the 2016 television movie available on streaming.

Just two months into his presidency, Ronald Reagan lay near death after a gunman's bullet came within inches of his heart. His recovery was nothing short of remarkable -- or so it seemed. But Reagan was grievously injured, forcing him to encounter a challenge that few men ever face. Could he silently overcome his traumatic experience while at the same time carrying out the duties of the most powerful man in the world?

Told in the same riveting fashion as
Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, and Killing Patton, Killing Reagan reaches back to the golden days of Hollywood, where Reagan found both fame and heartbreak, up through the years in the California governor's mansion, and finally to the White House, where he presided over boom years and the fall of the Iron Curtain. But it was John Hinckley Jr.'s attack on him that precipitated President Reagan's most heroic actions. In Killing Reagan, O'Reilly and Dugard take readers behind the scenes, creating an unforgettable portrait of a great man operating in violent times.

One of the most interesting books I've ever read...
Loved this book! I really picked it up because of the title... because obviously Reagan wasn't killed. But I expected it to be a "rah rah Reagan" book and it truly was a historical narrative ! I'd say it's one of the most interesting books I've ever read!

Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency is an excellent addition to the "Killing" series by authors Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. Like other books in the series, Killing Reagan provides meticulous detail to the life of President Ronald Reagan, up to, including, and after the shooting which changed both his life, and the presidency forever. I really liked the way Bill described Reagan's early life as an actor, knocking audiences dead night after night in Las Vegas, and entertaining early television viewers on General Electric Theater. This book is excellent in many ways, but I have two reservations: 1) The assassination attempt itself does not occur until page 177, and material regarding the shooting by deranged loser John Hinckley, and its horrible aftermath seems terse, and unusually brief...considering the book is called "Killing Reagan." 2) This book seems more padded with peripheral material than other books by O'Reilly and Dugard. "Killing Reagan" provides interesting information on the Nixon Watergate Scandal, the British war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, Grenada, and other events. It's almost as if O'Reilly and Dugard researched the Reagan shooting, finished the book, realized it was too brief, and went back to the proverbial drawing board to research more material to bring up Killing Reagan's page count. The book is highly engaging, regardless. Because I moved last year, I need to dig up "Killing Patton" and read it, along with O'Reilly's current release "Killing of the Rising Sun." Until I get around to it, I may just read Killing Reagan again. The book is excellent, and I recommend it to anyone who loves books about history, or US Presidents. Please buy it today!

Okay, so I am the last person in America to finally have read Killing Reagan. When the Killing series are released I immediately purchase a copy, so as to get a First Edition, and then I let it sit for a few months as a silent protest against Bill O’Reilly for constantly interrupting his guests on The O’Reilly Factor. Still the Killing series are incredible reading as evidenced that Killing Reagan has been on the New York Times List for 17 weeks as this review is written.

As an amateur historian I have found the Killings series a refresher for what I already knew, and a study in what I did not know. Killing Reagan was such a book. While the heart of the book was days leading up to and then the assignation attempt by John Hinckley Jr.’s, it is much more as it reviews the life of Ronald Reagan and provides insights on what made this man the man he became.

Probably what I felt the most when finishing Killing Reagan was the similarities between the world when Reagan entered the presidency to the world today as we prepare for a new person to enter the presidency. Radical Islam raised its ugly head by attacking the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killing 63 of which 17 were Americans. This was followed by the bombing of the United States Marine barracks also in Beirut where 241 Americans were killed. Evidence in the Marine barracks bombing led back to Iran.

There were also domestic similarities that America was angry and divided; unemployment was high; national debt growing, interest rates were in the upper teens and a lack of hope was felt across this nation. Reagan was the president that truly provided Hope & Change.

The role of Nancy Reagan in Reagan’s presidency was explored and while I knew she was actively involved; I did not fully realize the extent. So many names from the past are mentioned, including Roger Ailes who coached Reagan in his debate with Mondale, which allowed Reagan to be re-elected by the vast majority. Roger Ailes, of course, is now the president of Fox News. His relationship with Margaret Thatcher was discussed including Reagan’s refusal to assist England militarily in their Falklands War with Argentina. I had forgotten some of the battles of that 1982 war, so this refresher was appreciated.

While Bill O’Reilly claims that he is actively involved in the writing of the Killing series, unless proven otherwise I see him as the idea guy with the vision of what to write next, with the actual research and writing done by the talented Martin Dugard. Regardless of who does the work, the final product is very satisfying and I look forward to future editions.

KILLING REAGAN, by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, appears to me to be a factual account of the life and times of our 40th president. The author's, in their attempt to construct an objective narrative, have delineated the negative aspects of Reagan as a young Hollywood actor and of course, they give more than equal time to all the positive accomplishments. In March of 1952 Reagan marries the former Nancy Davis, who happens to be pregnant, and throughout the book, it is clear that she has a tremendous influence on her husband. But, she is not the only woman to influence Ronald Reagan, commencing before he was the Governor of California and throughout the Reagan presidency. Their was one Joan Quigley, an astrologer, who gave continued advise to Nancy Reagan who used Quigley's information to directly guide some of the president's actions.

I think it is important to note several things: KILLING REAGAN is very well footnoted and many of those who have opined concerning President Reagan are quoted in the book. In such a book it is imperative that the authors cite both the good and the not so good aspects of Reagan's life.

One aspect of the book has bothered me and that is what or who actually killed Reagan. It doesn't appear that John Hinckley killed the president, although his actions in the assignation attempt directly influence the course of history. Did Reagan's accident and resulting head injury on the horse in Mexico lead to his death? How about the stress of being president? Or, did Alzheimer's disease cause his death? What about old age? The manuscript should have been titled differently. Perhaps something involving the history and times of Ronald Reagan; but not KILLING REAGAN.

Regardless of the title and ignoring those who rate it low; I believe the book is very much worth reading. The authors make it an exciting account and it is written in a reader friendly manor.

I am loving this series of books that really take you behind the scenes of history and help you get to know and understand the people and events you had heard of. Not difficult to read. I enjoy the way the chapters move from one character to another detailing the events simultaneously. I thoroughly recommend them.
