First off, this is Book 1 in the "One-Eyed Jacks" series and while it can be read as a standalone, I honestly think I would have loved this story more if I'd read the "Black Ops Inc." series beforehand. From what I understand Mike made at least one appearance (if not more) in that series and at times I felt as if I were missing some pieces of a puzzle. This story intrigued me enough to where I plan on going back and reading the Black Ops books before continuing on with the One-Eyed Jacks though, and would recommend others do the same since it seems to be a spinoff.
The characters of KILLING TIME were wonderfully well fleshed and entirely lovable. I adored Eva, Mike, his teammates Taggart and Cooper, and Gabe, a Black Ops member who has his own story which I can't wait to read! The brotherhood and camaraderie between Mike and his team was apparent and touched me emotionally. The romance between Eva and Mike was scorching in its intensity and a true joy to watch unfold. This book was vividly written with a gripping storyline, smart dialogue, lots of action, and a beautiful and compelling romance that I utterly loved.
There were a few things that kept it from being perfect for me however, such as a woman as bright and smart as Eva never seeing her husband for the man he truly was. Then there was the villain who I found much too predictable. I literally had this person pegged from the moment they were first mentioned, and thought their demise was anti-climatic and very impersonal for all the heartbreak and devastation they caused. With that being said, I still found this story to be an exhilarating and engaging read and I look forward to more from this talented author!
But I'm starting to think that Gabe, beautiful Archangel Gabe is this authors favorite hero. He was in E.D.E.N Securities series, then had his own book and now he played a roll in this book as well. Not that I blame Mrs. Gerard because I love Gabe too...Oh and Joe and well never mind.
Mike is drowning the memory of an op gone terribly wrong eight years ago. Eva lost her husband in that same op and is looking for answers and payback from Mike, who ended up as the scapegoat for the op failure. Eva set out to get her answers any way she can until Mike turns the tables on her. Then they both dive for their lives as an assassin opens fire on them both. It seems that Eve has been asking questions in the wrong places about Operation Slam Dunk (OSD) the op gone wrong and someone wants her silenced, permanently.
Mike's feelings about OSD are complex and he has run from them for eight years. Eva has brought all that back to him as well as opening him to deeper feelings for Eva. Together they determine to find out what really happened and who covered it all up.
In the first book, Eva Salinas is a woman on a mission: find out how her husband was really killed when Operation Slam Dunk in Afghanistan went sideways eight years ago, even though someone is trying to kill her in order to silence her. She has gone searching for and is bound and determined to drag any information she can out of Mike Brown. Mike is a helicopter pilot who was held responsible for the deadly debacle and for the death of the men involved--including Eva's husband.
A hot and sexy woman, Eva seduces a very drunk Mike and lures him into a hotel room where she cuffs him spread eagle to a bed and convinces him that not only she is a resourceful woman, but that he needs to clear his name.
I was delighted when Gerard brought in Gabe from the Black Ops series to help with this mission that took Eva and Mike into a military camp in the middle of Idaho with cult-like behavior in search of the truth, no matter how painful, while finding a love to heal their broken hearts and souls. Vintage Gerard, you say? Abso-freakin'-lutely! And I love it!
This is a fast paced suspense that will fill you with trepidation, yet unable to put the book down! 5 STARS
