Editorial Reviews

"Romantic suspense favorite Gerard is known for her fast-paced, special-ops–based books, and this is the first in her new One-Eyed Jacks series. From the intensely captivating opening scene to the last tender moment, Gerard takes the reader on an emotionally complex yet action-packed roller-coaster ride of romance and conflict, capitalizing on both sexual and situational tension. Mike and Eva leap off the page as smart, resourceful yet damaged characters who find solace and sanctuary in each other and their shared journey toward truth and redemption. Gerard hits the mark with this addition to her unique and successful brand of special-ops romantic suspense." (Kirkus)

This is the first novel of a series called One Eyed Jacks, and it is classic Cindy Gerard.
Mike Brown was a Naval Academy graduate and hot shot Helo pilot in Afghanistan, until eight years ago when a mission went very wrong. Since then he has been hiding out in Peru, running a semi-legitimate air cargo business . He has cut himself off from his former life, and is sober 364 days of the year...except on the anniversary of the disaster that ended his career. We meet Mike in a bar on that anniversary, and he is definitely NOT sober.
Mike is being seduced by this drop-dead gorgeous Latino woman who is pulling his every string! That is till she gets him someplace " private" sticks a needle in his neck, and he wakes up shackled to a bed! Meet Eve Salinas. She is an attorney with CIA connections investigating the mission gone bad. She is also the widow of one of the men who died.
It is a ride in a tornado from there. First they have to learn to trust each other, not an easy thing. People want them dead, someone from the Government included. There is so much action, and suspense I found my self holding my breath at one point. The attraction between Mike and Eve is so very hot, and so hard to deny, though they both try to. Mike and Eve have to fight their own demons to get to a place they can be together.
We meet a few of the BOI men, and they look like they will be regulars in this series. Very happy about that! I would highly recommend this novel to all Cindy Gerard fans, and anyone who likes military romantic suspense. This one is a keeper.

This is book 1 in Cindy Gerard's new spin-off series - One-Eyed Jacks. It follows both the Bodyguards and Black-Ops Inc series which are loosely connected. While this is the beginning of a new series and can be read as a stand-alone book, reading the BOI series first will allow you to get to know some of the connected characters.

Mike "Primetime" Brown has lived on the run from his demons for eight years, but a determined woman brings his past into focus after she knocks him out. Eva Salinas is out to find the truth of her husband's untimely death, and Mike is smack dab in the middle of it. Together they set out to right old wrongs and lay a path to a new future.

This is a story for those looking for a hot, twisting tale of revenge and redemption.

Content: Explicit sex, cussing with F-bombs (about 50, according to my search function) and some indiscriminate religious profanity (but only 5 times), plenty of violence, but it's not too horrendous.

I liked this one! Gerard has a nice turn of phrase and includes humor in her dialogue, like when Mike said, "In a pig's eye" upon seeing the boxes labeled PORK. Haha!

Killing Time is character driven. The suspense is not quite as solid as the development of Mike's character. Mike won my heart over completely. I found him to be a very sympathetic protagonist. His shame and despair were tangible, and totally credible. It felt so real, when he roared, "The hell I did!" in the sleazy hotel room in Lima. Awwwww!! His pain over his lost friendships with Taggart and Cooper was also tangible.

I also liked Eva. She's sexy, smart, compassionate and brave, yet practical and cool headed. Almost a Mary Sue, but not quite, for the tables turned on her more than once. She's perfect for Mike.

BUT, I REALLY wish they hadn't made love so soon. It simply didn't feel like they were emotionally ready. By the end their relationship felt more real.

The most moving scenes:

The scene where Mike decided he had been a coward. He decided to stop running. His angst and renewed determination felt authentic. Loved the scene when some guys suddenly appear. Mike is amazed, profoundly relieved, and just plain happy. Awwww!! Well written! Also, I was moved by the scene where he feels caught on the horns of a dilemma -- stand and fight, risking it all -- or flee, risking his self-respect and his nation.

The suspense parts of the plot were decent (if fairly predictable) all the way to about 80%, when Gerard pulled a lame one. Grrrr.

I've always been a huge Cindy Gerard fan. This book started out OK, but I was soon bored. I was glad to read that this was a new series -- that she finally moved on from the BOI series -- only to be disappointed to find that this book is, in fact, another continuation with the same characters. After this many novels, it's getting a little boring, and very predictable. The relationship between Eva and Mike didn't really click with me. I wasn't crazy about either one of them. I guess what really disappointed me in this book is the way it wrapped up WAY TOO QUICKLY.

******SPOILER ALERT!!!!*****

When our group of unbelievably (and I do mean unbelievably) gorgeous, smart and infallible heroes find themselves in the usual hot spot, they try to shoot down a helicopter full of some of the bad guys who are escaping, but fail. Then, of course, the gang from the other books rushes to the rescue in their Black Hawk helicopter and blows up the helicopter full of bad guys, which then crashes to the ground on the rest of the bad guys, killing them, too. Since our "heroes" were incommunicado with their good-guy buddies, how the heck did the good-guy buddies know their friends (our heroes) weren't (a) in the helicopter or (b) on the ground with the rest of the nefarious bunch? Given that, you'd think they would find out before potentially blowing up their friends. It makes no sense and the reader is given the impression that the author had met her required pages and just gave it up quickly.

I'm ready for a new group of people instead of the same old super heroes and the same old scenarios. If you've read her previous books, then you've read this one. I expect more from Cindy Gerard. Sadly, she didn't deliver with this one.
