Mystery, suspense, humor and action.
The characters were fun to follow and you really never knew up to the end who you can trust and who you can’t.
They were easy to relate to and easy to follow and like while each of them were unique an likeable in their own way.
The story lie was amazing and kept me in the edge of my seat up to the last page.
Overall this was a great and enjoyable book that kept me guessing and entertained all the way through. Was written very nicely and easy to follow and fast paced.
I very much look forward to the next book
I rate it 4 ★
Nick is hired by a local pastor after his 18 year old daughter and her boyfriend disappear. Initially, Nick thinks this is just a young woman sowing her wild oats, but soon discovers that is not the case.
This book was so entertaining. The writing was great, and the storyline is so original that you won't find anything like it - other than maybe on an episode of Justified; because I could see Raylan Givens involved in a case like this one that involves not only the missing couple, but some deaths, toxic waste, a dentist gone bad, Homeland Security, and one man who has the worst of luck when it comes to trying to do...well, just about anything. I haven't laughed so hard at someone's bad luck like I did that of the antagonist in this story. He's not a really bad, or evil, person - he can't seem to find a way to do the right think without messing it up. Or even the wrong thing.
I really, really enjoyed this book, and I will definitely read the next Nick Sibelius book when it comes out. Wonderful entertainment.
What I like:
characters: Nick was a mess when he started in the book. He was a good honest guy but a mess. He was lost and mired in the past and wanting to get back at the one who put him into a loop of guilt and anger. The one who killed his partner. I loved how his friend helped him to comeback at the end. He did grow in the book and learn things. I love his assistant Alice who isn’t Alice. She/he was just the right amount of aggressive, sassy and spicey. She didn’t judge and was a hidden gem for Nick. Glad he realized this and crawled his way back. I hated to see Nick so twisted up inside, it seemed he just didn’t get a break.. It added a flair and showed you where Nick was at but sometimes for me it hurt to see. He was such a good character but I just hated to see it it had you feel empathy for him and had you root for him as well. He was still a mess at the end but not as bad.
Marylou was sassy and smart. She was very protective of her family even when they didn’t deserve it. I did feel bad for her brother. He was a lazy man but did have a good heart and just didn’t seem to know how not to get in trouble. I hated how she deceived Nick. He really loved her and she didn’t help his state of mind at the end of the book. I loved her kickbut attitude and how she took care of those thugs. Her love of family and sacrifices were awesome as well.
Plot: Action packed and kept you in the moment. There were so many different things going on but that tied together. Nick was great at seeing the trees beyond the forest but sometimes his past clogged up his mind. The different way everything tied together was great. RW Hacker does excellent at tying it all together and not having it go stale.
What was Meh:
sometimes there was more detail than I would have liked. It didn’t detract form the story but just slowed down the progress a little. I know that it was necessary for those to get a feel for what was happening but for me sometimes just a wee bit much.
Good book. I love the plot and the story of Nick. I was glad it didn’t get to much in the romance area because to me that would have detracted from what was truly going on and I think would have hurt the story of Nick. the little romance we saw helped us to get clarity into Nick. I love how there were many different activities going on and how they tied together. The writing, while at times more descriptive than I would have liked, was excellent and helped rope you in and tie it all together. the story itself kept you engaged and wanting to see if Nick could get out of the mess that was his life and begin to pull things together but also solve all that was going on and come out of it alive. A great action packed story of a man struggling with life and getting a case that brought his past to the forefront and helped him to realize he needed change but also we got a great case of cases that Nick had to unravel and figure out how they were tied together and how to wrap it up, help his client and get justice without losing himself, friendships and his life. I do look forward to seeing what Nick and Alice will be up to next in this series.
