How I use Huggs: I use Huggs and his friends to introduce feelings. Having a story makes it more fun and tangable for young children. If during a session or group I see a child invading personal space or getting very excitable I can hand them Huggs and say your very excited like Huggs today. With multiple kimochis children can pick the kimochi they most feel like, or sometimes I hand them all out, 1 per child, we talk about each of them and strategies they could use - like a tentacles/arms distance from friends (personal space). Kids can also pick out a feeling and tuck it into the pouch. They can pull their feeling out and share it with the group or keep it hidden depending on the situation. Sometimes I tuck a feeling into the pouch and ask them how the feeling might relate to their kimochi. With older clients we write our own stories using these figures, it makes it much less personal to talk about Huggs problems and what he can do. This is a very versatile tool for clinicians. I think that a parent could easily pick out a Kimochi that seems relateable to their child and that it would be a wonderful toy in the home.
I'm rating this a 4 vs a 5 for two reasons. I also have some of the larger kimochi's. When I have both out the kids are way more drawn to the full size kimochi's (which come with 3 feelings). The full size kimochi's also come with a book that tells about each of the kimochi's what they're strengths and weaknesses are and how they relate to their feelings. The mini kimochi comes with a story which includes other kimochi's (nicer if you have the others mentioned) but I really wish it came with just the information about himself. I feel like that would make a better teaching tool when introducing these. Finally Huggs comes with the feeling Happy and I really wish he came with the feeling Excited because he is so excitable. I purchased the package of mini feelings, which I highly recommend, so I have excited so it's not an issue for me.
That being said I do find that some of the highschool aged kids do get drawn in by these little guys and enjoy clipping the the mini feelings. Thus far my under 10 population has mostly preferred the larger kimochi's.
