Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP edition. 2012 full-length debut from the international sensation. In the past two years, Iamamiwhoami has surprised, delighted and intrigued in equal measure. Beautiful and mysterious music videos began to appear online, both surreal and visually sumptuous. Speculation was rife as to who the artist in question might be whilst the videos generated millions of hits and created a huge online following. Over time the singer was discovered to be Jonna Lee, though little was known of her or her collaborators. Plaudits followed including a Swedish Grammy award for 'Innovator of the Year', plus nominations for two MW online music awards in 2011 and the 'Digital Genius Award' this year.

This is an amazing new artist, or perhaps, new side to an artist. Jonna Lee has been making music under her real name for years, with more of a folk/pop/singer-songwriter vibe. Iamamiwhoami is a more electronic, audiovisual project. If you like very creative electronic music, with mostly female vocalists, such as The Knife, Fever Ray, and Royksopp, you will love this. If you used to love Bjork, but think her last 3 albums are crap, you will love this. It really is much different than all those artists though. It has a very dark, spacey, and mysterious sound to it, while still somehow remaining somewhat catchy and irresistibly alluring.

Jonna Lee's vocals are otherworldly. They certainly sound different than on her solo material; I'm sure there is a lot of processing and manipulations going on. Watch the videos on YouTube to get an even further idea of her imagination running wild. This is really one of the most exciting new artists I've discovered this year, and I can't wait for more.

This is a great first album from the artists behind iamamiwhoami. If you like dreamy electronica with mysterious female vocals and cryptic music videos, you'll love this. I've enjoyed their videos on youtube since their debut in 2009 when they were an anonymous band everyone was speculating about. It's nice to see CO-OP Records representing iamamiwhoami, and marking the band's transition from an online visual art and music experiment to a touring musical act with a debut album.

kin has some very strong tracks- album opener "sever", dance-y "play" and "in due order", and mystifying layered "kill" in particular. It's a short album, barely more than an EP, but the length is understandable when you know that there is a music video for every song. If you buy the digital version of the album, be sure to check out the videos on youtube (and their earlier "bounty" videos) because they are a big part of the iamamiwhoami experience!

The physical cd/dvd is handsome but minimalist, echoing the black cube in the video for "goods" and used in the band's live performances. I know I'll enjoy watching kin's videos as an arc.

After loving iamamiwhoami's online stuff for so long, I'm happy to own their debut album. I preordered it June 5, 2012 and did not receive it from Amazon until over four months later, November 7. This is a great album and it was worth the wait, but the ever-changing availability from Amazon was very frustrating. If you want the physical cd/dvd, you may do better by ordering directly from the band at towhomitmayconcern.cc and not waiting for Amazon to import more!

This is a great album from beginning to end. I never had heard of IAMAMIWHOAMI or Jonna Lee prior to six monhs ago, but I am sure glad I stumbled upon her.
The album takes advantage of the listner by creating a smooth atmosphere (almost like a lullaby) with sever, and then immediately pulls you for with the agression of drops. The album does this over and over again culmenating in a pop song "goods" when is like a swedish throughback top 40 song.
There is not a note on this album that I do not like, and her vioce is very unique (though difficult to interpret sometimes)
If you like bands such as Planningtorock, Fever Ray, and even Lady Gaga, you would like this album.

I can't think of a more creative band. Videos, music....whatever the hell else they do? This is electronic at it's most creative. Have you seen their awesome videos? They caused a sensation a few years on youtube. Great showmanship there. Anywho the music is just so unique, nothing out there captures the same sensibility. KIN is a new triumph in their already brilliant lineup.

One of the most interesting multimedia projects in the last decade finally decided to give a physical form to their art. And even though it's annoyingly minimal, the packaging is a statement for itself - it's not supposed to distract you from the content of the two discs you get here. The DVD is obviously the more playable of the pair, since it contains the videos for every song on the CD, and not to mention the amazingly gorgeous imagery that will move you in more ways that you can imagine. And the music? Diverse, hard to describe, it's pop in its essence, but it's pop done right - as a mutation of great ideas and excellent studio skills. Jonna's vocals are distorted, soaked in reverb, distant, but you can always hear those moments when her voice cracks, and it ironically gives it a more natural/emotional feel, even though it's surrounded by all the studio trickery you can dig up in Sweden.
And to end this review subtly: AMAZING. BEST ALBUM OF 2012. BUY IT!

(Next year, they're re-releasing their first album "bounty" in a similar way. Get that one too!)

Bought this from a third party on here and was worried that it wouldn't include the art book and DVD as it was now detailed in any of the descriptions. I was happy to receive this brand new just as listed on the artists website.

Wozy, reverb-soaked electro-pop from Sweden (where else?). And for a pop album, this manages to traverse a pretty wide array of sounds and moods from delicate to bubbly to dark and rhythmic to intoxicatingly dreamy, the latter of which being my personal favorite. The adventurousness of the music here is what adds up to the album’s greatest strength- track individuality. None of the songs here step on each other’s toes and despite this diversity, they are all unified by an infectiousness that stems from great melodic sensibility. There’s also a quirky, off-kilter quality to the music here that really sets it apart from the others that populate the crowded genre. This is immediately apparent in the videos that accompany each of the tracks on the album, but is also certainly present within the music itself in the form of unique vocal delivery and unorthodox textures. The outlandishness of the music unquestionably contributes to the draw, but ultimately the strength of the melodies is what keeps me coming back.
