I have always flirted with the idea of going veg but I think I didn't really understand WHY I had the inclination to do so. I grew up an absolute four food groups kid. I love food. As I've gotten older, I've considered the way I eat. A dozen years ago I asked my then boyfriend (now husband) if he'd ever consider going meatless and he said heck no! But as we've become more aware of health, sickness, all the crap in foods and food processing that are probably giving us all cancer, we started switching to organic foods and meats. We picked up this book in the height of our organic food ventures. It made us decide to stop eating meat and replace it with whole grains instead. Organic meat was just too expensive.
This book is very simple, exactly what the title says. I don't consider this a weight loss guide though, and it shouldn't really be considered a weight loss guide - it's a lifestyle guide. It talks about the main reasons consider cutting down on or cutting out animal products and going mostly plant based. Things like - general health, saving the planet and saving the animals. I'm not going to lie. In my home life, my goal isn't about saving the planet or the animals. I'm more about health. But Alicia doesn't preach. She simply breaks down the reasons, gives her explanations and ends there. That's what I like about this guide. You take what you want from it and can easily leave the rest behind. She even says you don't have to go all out. Flirt by cutting out your choice of animal products, go vegan or go superhero. It's your choice. Just try it for four weeks. That's what my husband and I did and here it is, almost 2 years and he hasn't touched meat - surprise, for the meat/potatoes guy! This is the guide that broke things down so simply that it made sense and wasn't preachy and challenged us to just TRY for four weeks.
I think some die hard, longtime vegans will ridicule this book and say it's too simple. But I feel it's perfect and simple enough to get anyone to understand. Now, anyone who I know who shows an interest in going veg, I get them this book. It's not about going all out. It's about finding your reasons why and trying it. When people ask me what got me into eating the way that I do, I am still a little embarassed to say it was an Alicia Silverstone book, but I guess if that's what it took, I'm very fortunate to have found this.
