Editorial Reviews
Review
“Horn has a gift for weaving the supernatural with Southern Gothic horror overtones and real-life drama, but it’s his characters who draw readers in. The King of Bones and Ashes is at its heart a complex family saga, and Alice and the other central characters are fascinating.” —The Big Thrill
“Palpable descriptions of magic both enchant and disturb…Horn expertly weaves disparate story lines into a breathless, enthralling ending.” —Booklist
“Horn’s rich characterizations and setting, sparkling magic, and creepy villains bolster the narrative, and his focus on women as major players is particularly refreshing. The terrifying conclusion will have readers looking forward to the next installment.” —Publishers Weekly
“New Orleans, witches, and a bit of voodoo make for a fun, wonderfully appealing story… Just delicious…Author J. D. Horn does a wonderful job of building his magic system, and it feels very natural in a New Orleans setting.” —Bookreporter
“This contemporary fantasy is a complicated story that mixes the real-life events of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation that New Orleans experienced with the ongoing tribulations of local witches…Superbly done…Dark and gritty.” —RT Book Reviews

The only problem I had with the book was the many characters. Perhaps it’s because I listened to the audio book vs. reading? I plan to listen to the story again as I know I missed some things in the beginning- the book is full of details, big and small, so pay attention. The story is told through the different viewpoints of the characters. The narrator for the audio book was great- easy to listen to voice.
This series has a more serious tone than his Witching Savannah series, so if you’re looking for something similar to that, you might be disappointed. This is not a book for the kiddos or faint of heart- contains violence and death.
I will be reading/listening to the next book in the series as this series is full of potential that I hope will unfold in the second book. I would recommend this book if you are into dark fantasy.
It reads very slow.
It’s not just the first five or six chapters either. It didn’t start to pick up for me until halfway through. This book almost lost me so many times.
Don’t get me wrong. J.D. Horn lays out the foundation for this series very well and he’s thorough in his telling. The characters were great, though there are many. There are lots of moving parts to this story with a lot of depth. Without any doubt, the author captures them wonderfully.
The pace was just not for me.
People who have the patience will really enjoy this story. There is plenty of it.
I am undecided if I will move onto the second book of this series or not.
After the prologue, the story starts a little slow, but I think that's to be expected with Gothic stories- it lays the groundwork so the reader can understand how everyone ties to one another. Horn drops enough tidbits to keep you really invested as the action ramps up.
My only complaint is the climax was very short. As if in the middle of battle the director yelled CUT! and everyone wandered away. A few loose ends were tied up, but ultimately it is a cliff hanger. Personally, I'd recommend waiting until the sequel is available before starting this book. After the last page the Marin witches & Co. stay with you and you will definitely be wanting more!

There are no distinct voices in the book so every character sounds exactly the same on the page and the only way you can tell who is supposed to be telling their tale is by the names; they really do all blend in to one. The real problem comes form the fact that the cast is so vast so you never really get under the skin of any one of them and the homogenisation of them all makes it even worse.
The basic premise of witches losing their power and their being a book that could hold the secret to them getting it back is a strong one. The mixing of Voodoo religion and a more European take on Witchcraft works well within the setting and allows for the use of some wonderful settings - what is more iconic than the Garden District or The French Quarter in New Orleans? Juggle in some childhood bogeys and you have a promising start - unfortunately when it comes to the execution of the tale it all fell apart.
I finished the book a week ago and can only remember a couple of the characters with any clarity but I am not entirely sure if I have who is who right in my head. For instance there is Evangeline - was she the one whose mother was Soulange the Voodoo Priestess or is she the one who ran the bar? You know, I am pretty sure she is one with the bar and an unhealthy relationship with the males of the Mason family. So did her mother go to the Dreaming Place or was she killed by her sister witches? Or was her mother neither of these ancestors and soeone else entirely?
You get the point by now - it is one confusing book.
Overall, there are some good ideas in here but it is the execution that has let them down. I have, sadly, already purchased the second book in the series so I will read it at some point but I certainly won't be looking forward to it with any sort of anticipation - more a dread of "well I bought it so I'll have to read it".
The story centres on the Witches of New Orleans and the fact that magic is dying. Alice is put into an asylum at the age of seven after witnessing the death of her brother. Despite seeing him pull the trigger Alice knows he is not responsible. Now back home following her grandfather's death Alice doesn't understand is walking into.
This book kept me gripped from start to finish. The story is gripping and the characters seem to leap off the page.
Now if you excuse me I'm off to read the next book in the series as I can't wait to see what happens next.
I am very disappointed with this book especially as I have enjoyed previous books by this author and those were worth reading again I can't bring myself to finish this. Waste if time waste of money.
