Editorial Reviews

Only a handful of musicians can lay claim to a musical moment-be it a song, a killer guitar solo, or a wailing vocal-that will be forever etched in the memories of music fans. Bill Kirchen had a moment like that: his guitar work on the Commander Cody classic "Hot Rod Lincoln"-but Kirchen's career has been much more than just that one song. It has spanned over 30 years and also includes (in addition to his 10-year stint with Cody) performances with artists such as Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, and Danny Gatton. Bill Kirchen has come to be revered as the dean of roots music guitarists. He continues to tour actively in many U.S. markets.

And I'll say it again - This Is a Great CD. I saw Bill Kirchen play last weekend at a little bar in St. Louis, and talked with him a while between sets. He is totally gracious and genuine. He was selling some of his CDs, and after he asked which of his songs I liked best, recommended this one. Well, he nailed it.
I believe this CD, while not a "greatest hits" CD, is a compilation of some of his truck drivin'-rockabilly-rock and roll type songs. And does it rock. Bill Kirchen, who was playing a tan Telecaster that looked 40 years old, is just a great guitarist. The CD consists of oldies (LOOKIN' AT THE WORLD THROUGH A WINDSHIELD, among others) and Kirchen's own material (for example WOMB TO THE TOMB and TRUCK STOP AT THE END OF THE WORLD). TRUCK STOP is one of the best and funniest songs I've ever heard, and features strongly what is best about the CD - Bill Kirchen. His twangy guitar is reminiscent of old Buck Owens records, and TRUCK STOP clearly owes a large debt to Dave Dudley's SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD, but it pays that debt off early and takes off into areas Dave and Buck never entered.
The music, the lyrics, the singing, the guitar playing are all just wonderful. If twang is your thang, you will love KING OF DIESELBILLY like I do.
Did I mention before that this is a great CD?

A previous reviewer mentions that HRL is a great, unforgettable moment in Kirchen's career. He understated it and didn't say why. When the lyrics have the kid being pulled over by the cops, Kirchen goes into this gag where the cop starts pulling over all these rock stars and mimicking snippets of their signature sounds. "the glimmer twins" (Satisfaction), the Fab Four (Ticket to Ride), The Pre-Fab Four (Last Train to Clarksville)" and on and on including Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Jimi, Elvis; Deep Purple, it seems never to end and he just nails all these riffs in rapid succession. Truly astonishing and one of those songs you look for because you will play it endlessly.

I did not know who Bill Kirchen was until he was scheduled to play at the Lowell Folk Festival in Lowell, MA a few years ago. Well, I saw that the type of music was called "Dieselbilly" and knew that, whatever that was, I was going to like it!

This is now one of the CD's I play very often indeed, and plan to send one to someone who is about to become a truck driver. Gotta have the right music on board, and this is exactly the right music.
