When I think of LH Cosway, I immediately think of quirky, eccentric characters and an outside-the-box plot. Cosway consistently crafts such unbelievably well-developed characters and sets them inside the most fantastical, layered circumstances and she makes me just want to sink right down inside her stories and never come out. King of Hearts felt different... oh, believe me, I still felt like I wanted to wrap myself up in this story and never come out of it. I fell in love with these characters immediately, with their story and I was so consumed with where this would all go that I couldn't think of anything else. But Oliver King and Alexis Clark didn't feel so odd to me, they didn't feel so eccentric... or maybe they did and LH Cosway just exceeded my expectations by making them feel very real in all of their peculiarity. Oliver King is a successful businessman but he's also a gifted pianist and he comes from a family with tightly locked up secrets. Alexis Clark is his new assistant and everything from her fashion sense to her innate curiosity to every hilariously unexpected word that comes out of her mouth makes her a character the likes of which I've never read before. These characters might not be strange and different in the traditional LH Cosway sense of the word, but they are refreshing, they are original and they're fraught with interesting, magnetic personalities demanding that I loved them more than I ever expected to love two characters when I opened this book.

Oliver King was first introduced in Hearts of Fire as the drunkard brother of the circus owner who obviously had a story to tell.

At first I wasn't sure if I was brave enough to read this book. I don't like huge amounts of drama and from Hearts on Fire (the second book in this series) I knew this book was about an alcoholic man who was once the King of wall street and his fall into vagrancy. That to me says lots of drama, but after reading this book, I'm glad I took that chance. Yes, the topics are dark: mental health issues and alcoholism, but the character's don't wallow in pity or darkness. Oliver and Alexis are the strengths of each other's weaknesses. To me, this book is about love's healing powers. This book shows that even though life is very imperfect and can be very painful, there are those who help you overcome the obstacles and become stronger in the long run. I have to hand to L.H. Cosway. Oliver King's transformation through out the book was remarkable - grace into utter darkness. She ended the book with me admiring Oliver King's humbled strength.

I must admit to a substantial amount of trepidation about reading this book. I totally loved the two previous books, and having already "met" King, I wondered how on earth I could enjoy a book about him. I couldn't fathom a story that would make him a suitable main character.

That kind of thinking was seriously underestimating the talented writing of L. H. Cosway though. The author came through with flying colors.

King was charming, funny and completely captivating in the first half of the book, though we get periodic glimpses of his frailty and growing alcoholism. Alexis is a strong and beautiful (inside and out) leading lady, and I quickly grew to love her as King did.

It's imperative that you read Hearts of Fire before this book because this one is written in 2 parts, Before and After, the middle part being included on the story about Lille and Jack. I was happy to see the author saw fit to not go over any of what she'd already covered about that part of King's life. I found this to be a rather clever approach to writing a story, and I enjoyed it.

I see in the reviews that not everyone loved the second half of the book, but I certainly did. The road back from hell was just as interesting as the first part about falling in love. And as we understand from the previous book that the circus was pretty much offline and out of the loop, I had no problem believing that King was in the dark about what had transpired in his absence.

For me, this book was a testament to strength and love. It's about reinventing yourself in the best of ways. Alexis believed she could do it because of what King had told her, and he believed he could do it because of her faith in him. Beautiful.

I was really truly enjoying this story so much until about the 50 percent mark than I thought What the heck!!! Ughhh! !!!!!.The story just fell off the rails and didn't come back strong until the awesome epilogue. So a really good read until the 50 percent mark for me and then the story was just ok. Until the epilogue than back to really good again because I liked the ending , loved that King finally had a voice. . Seriously though did the author forget we live in 2015?? where there is internet, cell phones, newspaper's...how could King not know 6 year's worth of facts and outcomes. How did his sister and friends not have had any contact with the world outside of the circus to not know what really happened to King even if King refused to look back, did everyone stop using the internet and reading the news ?????. It just got too damn farfetched and I was thoroughly disappointed by that. Come on seriously King was supposedly a mega million aire well known business tycoon, son of a famous mother and never did he nor any of his family or friends ever even look back once in 6 years ,he didn't even once check on his love the only person that held his heart. I just couldn't and wouldn't buy it , it was utter nonsense from 56 percent on.The whole story just went from a really good read to a unbelievable read so fast that I was completely shocked by the direction this author went in.I don't know what this author was thinking but hopefully she won't do that again. The story was so solid it didn't need the 6 year's later deal , it was a ridiculous reach that I didn't appreciate. Ms Cosway is a smart and talented writer but the story line at the 50 percent mark just ruined the last half of the book for me until the epilogue , I will say that was well done.Read more ›
