Editorial Reviews
Review
A concise, scholarly, brilliantly written treatise on the history and excellence of the Bible we love. I am so excited that we now have this resource to use and recommend. If you only buy one book this year, make it this one. ~ Jim Alter --Ancient Baptist Journal
Overall, this book is very well done and should be considered an excellent reference in regards to the King James translation. No matter what one's views are of the King James Bible, this work gives valuable insight into the efforts that go into putting together a solid translation of the Word of God. --Journal of Dispensational Theology

If you like reading Genesis 11, Numbers 34, and the genealogies in the gospels, you'll love this book. But if long lists of names make you want to claw out your eyes with your own hands, skip this. I was expecting a history of the King James Bible, but not the details Dr. Vance loves to include. Pages, and pages of the lineage of King James. Wow. Who really cares? This book is terrible. Do yourself a favor and keep looking.

Dr. Vance reminds us of the beauty, the grandeur, the stateliness of the KJV. Not only does he present the KJV as the prime example of the English language at its best, he compares it with the DDVs (Dumbed-Down Versions), thereby showing that not only is the Textus Receptus on which the KJV is based is superior to the Alexandrian texts, but that the KJV translators were superior to today's translators in learning and scholarship. In a world in which "modern" is almost always considered "better", he goes into great detail about the remarkable qualifications of the KJV translators. This book is a much needed work, for the magnificent KJV may someday be in danger of extinction due to a landslide of modern translations as well as to misrepresentation of its accuracy and relevance.

This is Laurence M. Vance's crowning Achievement. The book he was born to write. Not only is it his best work, it ranks as one of the very finest, if not the finest, books on the Authorized King James Version. His research is meticulous and his writing skills at their peak. The information contained in this volume is imperative, essential and crucial to the spiritual health of the body of Christ. This should be read and diligently studied by every English speaking Christian.
When purchasing a copy of this work, be sure to get the second edition, clearly marked as such on the cover. While the first edition is a fine little book, it is only 164 pages, whereas the 2nd is 374. A few more chapters and this could be the much needed, single volume definitive work on the King James Bible. It is that good, and I've read around 60 books on the subject. I receive a tremendous blessing every time I re-read this precious book. The blessing of the Almighty is present in a wonderful way, my faith in God is strengthened and I am deeply edified.
This work contains 27 chapters, each containing a detailed essay on a particular subject able to stand by itself as a documented study, but combined together they become an overwhelming, glorification of God's word in the English tongue. As the character of King James and the scholarship of the translators is maligned so often, it is a real blessing to see these attacks put down with well documented evidence. My favorite chapters are 18, A Standard Bible, and 19, The Authorized Version and the "Originals". So many modern translations have "standard" in their title. Brother Vance shows my the AV is the true standard. The chapter following covers many of the Greek texts issued over the centuries, and why so many have found the AV to be superior to them all, and Vance presents the facts in a true, scholarly, honest examination of the facts. I cannot convey just how wonderful and edifying this book is! I love it!
For over two centuries the AV was the absolute standard of truth for the vast majority of English speaking Christians of all denominations. It was the word of God for God's people. It still is for a great many, in spite of concerted attack by Satan, "scholars", Jesuits, occultists, and sadly many well meaning Christians. A vast front of formidable enemies, and yet the AV stands strong. "But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you." 1 Peter 1:23. "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth, for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Psalm 138:2.

Chapter 4 alone is worth the price; a great chapter on Tyndale and his monumental work. A quote in the last paragraph of Chapter 4:"By strangling Tyndale, the Church thought to silence him forever. They were wrong." Used mightily by God.
