I first want to tell anyone who plans on reading this book that it is a difficult read. There is a lot of cursing (which some may find alright!), non-consensual sexual situations, murder (which I'm sure many find okay too, which could be troubling...)and many other situations similar to these. Proceed with caution. The author has, thankfully, labeled her own warning on the book so if you pick this up anyway knowing those things you can't fault her for that.
However, you can fault the execution of those things.
I want to say I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed me from page one and hooked me until the very end. I even plan on reading the second book!
But, I have to say I have problems with this story that have nothing to do with the author and her execution but more with the characters. You can argue that the author created these characters, blah blah, but personally I think if there is a story in you fighting to get out you should write it and not be faulted for who or what you wrote it about. Even cursing, evil, terrible people need their story told sometimes. People love reading about villains and heroes alike. Anyway...
Our male MC is named King, and he's portrayed as a bad ass guy. The kind of guy who will kill to protect what is his. He's had a rough life and no one can really blame him for being angry, but I have to admit that I didn't find King sexy. I know he was meant to be sexy, but I just I wasn't attracted to King nor was I for his relationship with Doe, our other MC who has lost her memory and can't remember who she is. There is a big reason why, but to avoid spoilers I won't mention that one. Other reasons are the way he treats her. I didn't find he sexy when he cursed at her, told her to stfu, etc. Nor when he physically grabbed her for his own needs, etc. I cringed a lot, because I wanted to like him in that way but I couldn't bring myself to find him attractive when he acted the way he did.
However, I like King. I know what you're thinking, but he's not an all bad guy. Sure, he isn't a "good" guy or a guy with many morals, but he isn't evil. I don't like him as a "boyfriend" type, but I like him nonetheless. He has certain things he needs to get together in his life, again which I won't mention to avoid spoilers, and he does care for Doe. In a f'd-up way. I do like messed up characters. I do like men who take control and dominate a relationship. I do like these stories BUT there were so many things about King I couldn't like. I do hope, in the second book, he gets a happy ending. I also hope this for Doe, no matter how it turns about for them. I'm not crazy about their relationship, but I think they both deserve to be happy whether it's together or apart.
I think overall this book was entertaining, but I felt so disgusted so many times. I felt sick and disheartened for them. It was a lifestyle that I didn't love reading about. However, T.M. Frazier has a highly entertaining writing style and her story was interesting. I finished it fairly quickly too. It's a dark read, but if you're okay with that and this book sounds good to you, go ahead and read it.
My favorite thing about this book was Preppy!! He was the light of this story. Preppy, like King, is messed up majorly and there were things I couldn't like about him. But again, he was still human. He was a character I kinda adored.
I'm not sure how I'll feel about book 2. I hope to give you a detailed run-down when I get there.
Hope you enjoy this book if you plan to read it!
Also, the rating is SO HARD. I was going back and forth between 3 and 4. I enjoyed it but not immensely. It made me cringe and I wasn't in love with the romance. But I still liked the story and characters...so 3.5 I guess. Onto the next one!
Total twist in the end when Doe finds her memories. Didn't see it coming. Only Tanner's storyline was a bit of a stretch and the 180 change in personality was a bit unbelievable at times. Still loved the books 1 and 2. Buy them both, read them...Its awesome.
Sometimes life isn't rainbows and unicorns...sometimes it dark and F'ed up. This is a story about overcoming those odds and taking care of business.
Well, this book blew me away!!! King and Doe are now one of my all time favourite book couples. Raised in different circumstances yet both have been through hell. However, with hope and love, it proves that people can rise above their circumstances. And Preppy is one of my favourite characters EVER.
I asked myself as I was reading...how can a book filled with filthy language and heartbreaking scenes that will leave you with tears running down your face, be one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read? This is because T.M. Frazier has written a book that is real and gritty but filled with hope and redemption.
This book and series is not one to be missed and definitely a new favourite of mine.
FIVE FANTASTIC STARS.
First it was very difficult for me to get into this book, because of the ideas that are presented. The idea of a young girl 17-18 yrs old without any idea who she is, with no one looking for her, and her only friend being a drug addicted junkie waiting for her next fix. The book has many dark situations along with drugs, guns, and violence.
I had to put the book down and walk away from it due to other commitments, but I can honestly say that at that point in the story, I was grabbed anyway. I had another break in my schedule and wanted to give it a change, so went back to King. And I am so glad I did! This book took a turn that I'm not sure I was expecting! I ended up falling in love with King and wishing him and Doe could find some sort of HEA.
I immediately grabbed the next book in the series, and can't wait or another break in my busy schedule so I can devour it!
Give King a chance you won't be sorry.
