I wasn't actually intending to read it at all - I just downloaded it for my nephew, but after I saw him giggling on the couch with it I thought I'd check it out because he doesn't read. I had to wait till his Mum had finished with it too. We both agreed the author reminds us of Spike Milligan - we grew up with his stories. I've read other work by this author and my theory is, if they write something good that I like (or the kids like) GET MORE OF IT.
The author seems quite aware he is writing for adults and kids and there's plenty of material peppered in here that will keep adults entertained. There's an artist called Salvador von Hirst for instance who is a bit of a take on Salvador Dali whose modern art seems very connected to this nonsense world.
Duke and Michel, plus Boris the rat, are incredibly funny. The humour is quirky and unpredictable, a constant surprise. I laughed out loud throughout this intense reading experience. At times I cried. The crying times corresponded with the virtual book throwing. I loved Duke and Michel so much that I wanted to have a say in what happens to them. Votes for readers!
Study the cover. Great artwork by Elliott Beavan, that also contains clues to upcoming events in the book. 'The King Tingaling Painting' is for kids who appreciate a story that reflects the difficulties and struggles of life. With wild jokes. And also for adults who want to experience truly original, powerful writing.
The Master, the child-catching, destroyer of worlds, has taken Michel's family and Duke's Country Dog-Premium Nibbles and the boy and hound set out to retrieve them.
Although the story is written in a very chatty style, the standard of language is very good and would enhance children's vocabulary.
This is a very enjoyable book.
It takes a threat to his food supply before the ever pompous and sarcastic Bassett hound, Duke, offers to join Michel in locating the Master and trying to mastermind a rescue plan.
As this complex rescue attempt unfolds, however, it becomes apparent that Duke and Michel are just pawns in a brutal game between the Master and the strange, self-obsessed, King Tingaling. The Master appears to be the final mastermind left pulling all the strings, and I fear that we'll now have to wait for Book 3 in the series to find out if Michel, his family, Duke, and Duke's precious Premium Nibbles are all going to make it through these events in one piece!
Another good pedigree book in the Duke and Michel series!
I compare the story telling of Elias Zapple to a great meal, you will savor each delicious sentence, every meaty paragraph and each and every tantalizing chapter. You will devour this entire book page after page and be completely satisfied and left with a genuine full feeling afterwards, and then there's dessert... Yes, that's right dessert! You will find yourself wanting to read this book again and find wonderful morsels of writing that somehow you missed on the first go around. Now, that in my opinion is the sign of a good book, a classic book. A Satisfying Book!
Read this now and starve no longer!
Zapple books are always rare treats for kids and grownups alike, and perfect for reading to youngsters. Don't worry that this Duke and Michel tale is part of a series: Zapple orients you adroitly and... off you go, into a weird and wacky world full of incomparable Zapple humor.
In this outing, Duke & Michel have a mission: rescue Michel’s family and Duke’s Premium Nibbles from The Mater, villain of the piece. But wait, the fun doesn't stop there: Duke and Michel become pawns in a struggle between the Master and King Tingaling, furious about portrait painted of him of him with a pineapple, riches and his pig, Buttercup.
Buttercup alone is worth the price of admission to this fun farce.
