"The Kingdom of God Is Within You" is Leo Tolstoy's magnum opus of philosophy and religious thought. The book is cited by Mahatma Gandhi as one of the chief influences in the development of his philosophy of non-violence. Tolstoy takes the reader to the heart of the message of Jesus Christ, laying aside the common dogmas of the church in favor of a literal understanding of Christ's teachings. This brings his philosophy to one of strict non-violence and a complete overhaul of the structures of modern society. The work is a masterpiece in the realm of Christianity.

When you read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), you read of a much different moral reality than today's culture of law enforcement, national borders, capitalism, war and other power structures. Jesus talks about love and forgiveness. What Tolstoy presents here is a plan on how to shift our culture into one of equality and love, as Jesus presented 2000 years ago. It's sobering to read some of the warnings of Tolstoy (written decades before the world wars). In that light, his warnings are even more relevant today than when they were first written.

It's a challenging book, in the best way. Tolstoy didn't seem to believe in the divinity of Christ, but in some ways, he took the words of Christ more seriously than many of us who do believe in Christ's divinity. This book is certainly thought-provoking, and it will absolutely make you rethink your career choice.

This is a book that is challenging and radical, in that Tolstoy asks us to take quite literally the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels. While certainly we have made some progress in the past 120 years, there is much in his writing that still holds absolutely true today. I found myself highlighting multiple passages, and thinking how true it is to today's world. For example:

"Men might well observe the laws if they believed the Tzars who made them were God's anointed, or even if they thought they were the work of assemblies of lawgivers who had the power and the desire to make them as good as possible. But we all know how our laws are made. We have all been behind the scenes, we know that they are the product of covetousness, trickery, and party struggles; that there is not and cannot be any real justice in them."

"The specialty of government is not to obey, but to enforce obedience. And a government is only a government so long as it can make itself obeyed, and therefore it always strives for that and will never willingly abandon its power."

and

"A man cannot be placed against his will in a situation opposed to his conscience. If you find yourself in such a position it is not because it is necessary to anyone whatever, but simply because you wish it."

I think he clearly gets at the problem of the Christian in relationship to the state, and while the government may do things in the interest of "goodness" there is always a threat behind that (and many things that the state does that are just plain wrong and evil). As an American it has certainly given me some new perspective on our military involvements around the world. I believe this is very challenging for anyone who is a serious Christian, or seriously believes in peace, and wants to go beyond the orthodoxy of what we are taught by the established church and government. This book could have benefited from some editing, but overall it is a fairly easy read, and well worth the effort.

This book could have been written today for the most part. I rated 4 stars because it is well written and has many legit points. Could not give 5 because I thought he really missed something's because he was wanting to prove his point. To blame Christianity for ungodly nations shows his lack of understanding a full spirt filled life. He would have done well to looked at prophesy. God has not changed since Christ. Christ even said if it were his kingdom then would my servants fight. I have been part of many churches including Mennonite. They all have there rules and he was correct in a lot of what he wrote. He was wrong in saying if we all would use none resistance peace would come. The bible says we are all as lambs led to the slaughter. There will be a time of peace but only when Christ destroys the powers that be. It is not an easy choice for man to be willing to die. Christians are becoming the minority in the world and many people hate them. I can not have his view as to how peace will come. I do very much agree with a lot of what was said.

I quote commonly attributed to Leo Tolstoy runs “You may not want the state, but the state wants you.”

Nothing could be more true right now, in 2023, than this adage.

From vaccine mandates, to severe abortion restrictions, to Covid lockdowns, to a uniparty love for war, we are in a new authoritarian age where the state has run amok. Indeed, most of us in the United States seemingly toil for a corporate/state monolith, instead of it working for us, which is always the tendency of bloated, militarized, security states. We are almost certainly reaching a wall, an “end of empire,” as it were.

Furthermore, we are beholden to a “defense industry” and military-industrial complex that is completely out of control; with our tax dollars funding the forever wars and unceasing spending on the weapons of death.

This little booklet has proven an instruction manual for moving forward for me during the Covid era and beyond, when both political parties in America have become deeply enmeshed in ideologies that simply do not allow human freedom and most importantly peace and love to flourish.
