KINGDOM HEARTS Re Chain of Memories is the essential piece that bridges the gap between KINGDOM HEARTS and KINGDOM HEARTS II. A full 3D remake of the original Game Boy Advance release (2004), it was released in Japan in 2007 as part of the KINGDOM HEARTS II Final Mix+ compilation before finally making its way to North America. Combined with the card battle system of the original GBA release, KINGDOM HEARTS Re: Chain of Memories presents KINGDOM HEARTS fans with an entirely new playing experience. Sora, Donald, and Goofy travel down a long road that meanders through endless fields, and come to a crossroads. As Sora stands in the crossroads, he gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends. Just then, a mysterious man approaches from down one of the branching paths. Ahead lies something you need, he says, but to claim it, you must lose something dear. The man vanishes before a single path, leading to a castle that eerily resembles a girl's drawing... In the coming journey, what will Sora and his companions gain, and what will they lose? Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories bridges the gap between the original Kingdom Hearts and the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II. Chain of Memories from Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 2 is a complete 3D remake of the original Game Boy Advance release from 2004. This "bridge" installment was released in Japan in 2007 as part of the Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ compilation before finally making its way to North America. Combined with the card battle system of the original Game Boy Advance release, Chain of Memories for PS2 presents Kingdom Hearts fans with an entirely new gameplay experience.
The PrologueThe story begins with Sora, Donald and Goofy wandering through endless fields. Eventually, they come to a crossroad. Standing in the crossroads, Sora gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends.
From the distance, a mysterious man approaches from one of the roads. "Ahead lies something you need," he says, "but to claim it you must lose something dear." The man vanishes, revealing a single path that leads to the eery Castle Oblivion, which resembles a girl's drawing.
The Story
After this encounter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go their separate ways. Soon, on a night when his island home is besieged by a mysterious storm, Sora is whisked away to an unfamiliar burg known as Traverse Town. There he meets Donald and Goofy, and learns that there are strange things happening in the world.
Donald and Goofy set off to look for their missing king, and Sora joins them to search for his lost friend, Riku. After a long journey that takes them across numerous worlds, Sora and friends finally find Riku and the lost king. But to save all the worlds, Sora must use his Keyblade to close the door to darkness, even though Riku and the king are on the other side. Believing the king's parting words -- there will always be a door to the light -- Sora locks the door, and the trio sets out on yet another journey.
The Characters
The cast of Chain of Memories combines Kingdom Hearts characters with familiar Disney faces. Sora, is a 14-year-old boy and the hero of this tale. Although a little naive, Sora has an uncommon sense of justice. On his journey, Sora is accompanied by Donald, a court wizard who shares a striking resemblance to Donald the Duck of Disney fame, and the clumsy, easy-going captain of the Disney Castle Royal Knights, Goofy.
Other characters include the mysterious, shrouded man from the crossroads; Sora's lost friend, Riku, a 15-year-old boy who is cool and collected; the lost King, who bares a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse; and Kairi, a 14-year-old girl who's friends with Sora and Riku. Almost more strange than the man at the crossroads, a mysterious girl, Namine, draws pictures inside Castle Oblivion under close surveillance of an evil organization. As the story alludes, she may hold the key to Sora's most special memories.

With that all said the game is just as I remembered as far as the game play from the original. Cards are still a little difficult to fight with but if you have a strategy and you know WHO you're about to battle it helps SOOO much. However, the voices seem a little off to me. I know that the voice actor is all grown up now but I feel like they should have gotten someone who could mimic Sora's 14 year old voice rather than his current one from Kingdom Hearts II. I can't help but date the game wrong in my head because this is SUPPOSE to be right after he sealed the door in Kingdom Hearts but it's like he's gone through puberty in a couple of days. Just really odd.
Other than than if you're looking for a challenge and far different game play than any you've had before in the series this game is it. Though, be warned, fighting heartless after heartless is much of what you will be doing while you're waiting to get the card to the next room you need to get to. My advice for new players? Battle a lot of heartless from the beginning to get enough room cards to help get you through to only battle when you want to level up and worry more about leveling up your CP rather than your HP. If you have higher and better cards in your deck you don't have to worry about getting hit and killed in your boss battles.
Not saying that I didn't appreciate the change in battle system...briefly. It was supposed to be a way to prevent mindless button-mashing--which I actually kinda like--and force us to use a more tactical approach...while still employing a little of that button-mashing skill. Maybe in the boss battles you do have to slow down and actively try to break cards. But c'mon, while fighting the hordes and hordes of Heartless, do you really want to make battles three times as long by waiting for enemies to make a move so you can break their cards, or do you just want to go melee on 'em?
The new characters were interesting, especially those of Organization XIII, but there could have been a much better way to introduce them. The plot wasn't horrendous, minus having to re-experience Sora's time in the Disney worlds, but it wasn't fantastic either. And I felt Sora's reaction to Namine was a tad overdone. I liked Kairi; I didn't see a need to replace her with another inactive female protagonist.
All in all, while I appreciated one playthrough, I would never pick it up for another go. Which pains me because I am one of those "perfect gamers" that likes to collect and complete everything. But after what seemed like millions of battles resulting in only 1/10 of the total number of enemy cards to collect, I thought it just not worth it to keep trying. I'll just look up the super special hidden scene online.
As soon as I got this game I thought I was gonna breeze through it easily like the Gameboy Advance version, but boy was I dead wrong!! LOL cause when you're playing as Riku his cards are different from the GBA version and also It threw me off when it came to that new feature where you have to stack your cards quickly before the timer runs out and you'll be left stunned while the enemy has a free hit on you. But if you play it right the combo comes out amazing! (Riku only)
And other positive things I gotta say is that now I KNOW how Larxene, Marluxia, Vexen, Zexion, and Laxeus sound like when they talk other than having to try hard to imagine how they sound like while playing the GBA version. Oh and another thing that Threw me off again was when it's the final battle between Sora and Marluxia it is very surprising how you gotta quickly pick up ALL your cards that he knocks off of you during the fight. Now this is a great challenge for me and I LOVE it. If you're a die hard Kingdom Hearts fan. GET THIS NOW!! Trust me you won't be sorry!!
