Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–8—This revision is virtually identical to the 2004 edition, except for updated websites and some minor changes in the text. Every photograph is the same, but they have held up well and do not look dated. They actually have more "pop" here in terms of clarity, contrast, and brightness, and will provide hours of enjoyable browsing or an opportunity to find pertinent information. The first section focuses on the horse itself—breeds, life cycle, domestication, and anatomy. The next section covers many areas of horse management, including feeding, housing, grooming, health care and first aid, and equipment. The third section examines the various aspects of riding, both western and English, although the majority of the photos feature English saddlery. This striking book would be an asset to any collection, but if you have the earlier edition, purchase it only if there is a real need for a second copy.—Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA

From Booklist

Author Ransford is a full-time writer who has written more than 30 books for children. An expert horsewoman, she owns a horse and two ponies.

This volume has suggested grade levels of three through eight. The opening sections contain general information on horses and then describe various breeds--hotblood horses, coldblood horses, warmblood horses, and pony breeds. The remainder of the volume covers keeping, feeding, grooming, health care, and riding in chapters that are detailed and precise and convey the serious level of commitment necessary to all aspects of care and riding. The lavish color photographs, some of which are taken from the author's The Kingfisher Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horse and Pony Breeds (2003), are indispensable visual aids to descriptions of housing, saddling, mounting, and so on. Photographs of youngsters handling animals will appeal to the targeted age group. The text is supported by a clear table of contents, a glossary, and an index. Younger children may have difficulties with some of the text. Terms, such as gymkhana, are not defined in context, although they may appear in the glossary.

An attractive, thorough book such as this one should satisfy horse lovers. It is a good choice for both school and public libraries. Sharon E. Cohen

I bought this book for a gift for a friend's son. He absolutely loved it. The pictures and explanation of different horses, gaits, training and more were awesome. I almost kept it for myself. Knowing he loved as much as I did and we are 38 years apart in age tells you its a good book for everyone.

I bought this for my 7-year-old niece. I shall never (I hope I shall never) forget her look of complete, total delight as she paged through it on her Mama's lap, on Christmas day. She takes it with her to school EVERY day! I did well--I bought the best horse book for this child who dreams of the day she can have her own horse. This book gave a special child in my life, a real joy--it gave me a treasure!!

It was a good reference book, however, I feel that there was not quite enough effort spent on the breeds. There are so many more than are listed in the book. Also, the exercises and equipment seemed to be geared more towards English riders than Western.

Got this for my 8 year old daughter, who LOVES horses, for Christmas. It is a wonderful book with a lot of information. My son has a Kingfisher Encyclopedia for his favorite sport, so I knew what kind of product this would be. It certainly did not disappoint!!! It's not really for younger children though, I think it's better for kids that can at least read fairly well independently.

I was surprised with the number and quality of the topics covered, and the many pictures. Scanning it before giving it as a gift, I realized that I actually know very little about horses and their world - much less than I imagined!

I got a chance to read through this book before I gave it to my 13 year old niece. She is not a particularly avid reader, but she loves horses. This book gives her a chance to learn all about them. I loved the glossy dust cover. The cover art is high quality. This book could serve as a coffee table piece.

This is a thorough encyclopedia on horses! I got it for my grade school grandaughter for Christmas in 2012. She "adores" this book! Who knows? This very book might be responsible for her becoming an accomplished horse woman!
