Sumner on December 16, 2013 Kingston seems to have pulled a Samsung and entered this device into the infamous hardware lottery. if you have version 5.05 of this device, then you are good to go and will achieve all rated speeds, power consumption, etc for it. This version of the device is manufactured in Taiwan. As of version 5.06, it is a total crapshoot if you will get a good drive manufactured in Taiwan or one from their other manufacturing sites in China. The mainland Chinese versions to put it nicely, don't even come close to the rated read/write speeds for this particular device, with write speeds falling from the advertised rate to a max of 240 mb/s on SATA III (device is officially rated at over 500 mb/s write speeds and the 5.05 version regularly achieves 540 mb/s). There are similar warnings and whatnot about this issue about the drive on other sites, with some customers going so far as accusing Kingston of bait-n-switch after submitting the 5.05 to all of the review sites where it was benchmarked and scored numerous high marks and then almost immediately (within two months) releasing the 5.06 into the retail market. Read more Read more	Great speeds but rather high power draw By Aaron on March 13, 2013 Size: 32 GB Style: 2.5" 2D MLC Verified Purchase I got this SSD to replace a slow and ancient hard drive in my laptop (circa 2008). The SSD vastly improves performance, delivering a whopping 60x/40x 4K random read/write over the old HDD in my tests (pic attached on the product page under "customer images"). It is much lighter and more durable than the old HDD, it is resistant to shock, and it doesn't cause noise or vibrations, unlike the regular hard drive. I have had nothing but good experience with ADATA products (RAM, memory cards, flash drives) so I'm fairly confident the drive will last. A couple minor quibbles though: 1. Upon installing the drive, I've noticed the battery life drop from 5hrs 30min to 5hrs flat. At first I thought it was merely due to active garbage collection the drive was performing after a fresh OS install but after the issue persisted for a few days, I decided to test it by putting the old hard drive back in (I've left its contents untouched) and the battery life went back up to 5hrs 30min. After searching online, I found that this drive pulls ~0.7W idle and ~1.5W active, which is actually slightly more than a regular 2.5" hard drive (~0.2W sleep/standby, ~0.5W idle and 1.4W active) hence the reduced battery life. This is by no means a deal breaker since increased speed/durability more than makes up for it. Also, this shouldn't be a problem for desktop users. 2. The area of the notebook enclosure right under the drive (away from the processor/fan exhaust) gets noticeably hot, to the point of being uncomfortable to use on your lap for extended periods of time. Once again, not a huge issue or a deal breaker for me as I mainly put the laptop on a desk. This also should be a non-issue for desktop users. PROS: -Dramatically faster than old HDD -more durable and resistant to shock in a portable machine -does not generate vibrations or noise unlike the old HDD -least expensive 64GB SSD model I've found at the time CONS: -slight drop in battery life -gets noticeably hotter than old HDD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE (5/29/13): The SSD continues to chug along nicely. I've largely gotten used to slight drop in battery life, but the heat issue continues to annoy me. I am keeping the rating at 4 stars because, ultimately, the SSD has made my old machine usable and has prolonged its service life for a fraction of what it'd take to replace it. That said, for the next revision, I really hope ADATA will focus on improving the power envelope and heat generation/dissipation on these because the competition in SSD space is picking up and soon there will be many more options, with higher capacities and better performance, available around this price point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 2 (02/21/2014): The SSD still works fine and performs nearly identically to when it was brand new, so those wondering about longevity can check the concerns at the door. Just a word of warning about this particular SSD

Format: Personal Computers

Kingston seems to have pulled a Samsung and entered this device into the infamous hardware lottery. if you have version 5.05 of this device, then you are good to go and will achieve all rated speeds, power consumption, etc for it. This version of the device is manufactured in Taiwan.

As of version 5.06, it is a total crapshoot if you will get a good drive manufactured in Taiwan or one from their other manufacturing sites in China. Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. Drives with firmware version 505 or 506 both meet advertised specifications. The firmware version has no bearing on the speed of the drive and drives typically ship with the latest firmware that has been qualified. All of our manufacturing facilities provide the same quality products and run at the same standards (http://www.kingston.com/us/company/facilities). If the drive is tested with ATTO Benchmark the speed results should meet or exceed advertised specifications which is officially 450MB/s read and write. Our KC300 SSD is 500MB/s write and 525MB/s read and our HyperX 3K is 450MB/s write and 540MB/s read. Horrible 5.0.6 firmware ruins SSD

Seems I found the real culprit after speaking with several SSD experts on various tech forums, get ready for a class action lawsuit Kingston. Here's the scam, Kingston switched to cheap asynchronous memory chips that don't run in parallel after the first few months of production.

That means single channel bandwidth instead of multiple channels like earlier v300 SSD's. Instead of running at 200mhz, its running at 66mhz. This effects read and write speeds enormously.

Kingston hid this fact by using solvent on the original labeling of the memory chips, then printed their own logo on top. Kingston does not manufacture any memory themselves. When SSD was shipped out for review it used quality Toshiba 19nm NAND but Kingston used solvent on chips labels and printed their own. This was odd, but the reason for it soon became obvious. After only a few months they switched to inferior quality chips with the same Kingston label.

NO OTHER SSD MANUFACTURER ERASES ORIGINAL NAND LABEL AND PRINTS THEIR OWN ON TOP!

This is FRAUD in my opinion and Kingston could very well be seeing a class action lawsuit coming there way for this stunt. Other SSD makers have tried this crap in the past and got busted. They were forced to RMA all the drives back to synchronous memory chips which cost much more.

Kingston switched to cheaper quality NAND without saying a word. Firmware for Sandforce SSD's cannot cause you to lose 70 percent of read and write speeds. Lesson learned, never buy anything from Kingston again, they are criminals.

Our V300 Solid State Drive uses the LSI SandForce 2281 SATA 6GB/s controller and MLC NAND from various manufacturers. The performance target for these drives is 450MB/s Read and Write using ATTO 2.41 with the SSD connected to a SATA 3.0 / 6Gb port. The SandForce 2281 controllers also employ a feature called DuraWrite. In simple terms, this enables data compression and minimizes the data written to the SSD. DuraWrite extends the drives endurance and overall drive life with a byproduct of increased performance. There are a number of benchmark utilities publicly available that you can use however we use ATTO Benchmark 2.41 which we feel best reflects a real world workload. ATTO is also easy to obtain and run from the utility's website. Other benchmarking utilities may use fully incompressible data as part of their standard workload. Incompressible data can negatively affect benchmark performance on both the read and write speeds of our V300 drive depending on which NAND we are using. This is irrespective of the firmware revision of the drive. If the results stated in your review are from another benchmark utility that uses incompressible data than it will not show our advertised speeds. If the drive you recieved is performing 70% slower using ATTO than we can set up a warranty replacement to get you a properly working drive. Not as fast as documented speed in the real world. Don't trust just one benchmark.

I purchase this drive recently from another seller and wanted to state my findings so far so you can fairly compare this drive to others. If you are upgrading from a 7200rpm Hard Drive, this will probably perform faster, but I would look to other drives if you want this for your OS drive or need true SSD performance. The price is attractive per GB right now, but for a bit more, you might find a much better drive that will perform well long into the future.

I've used ATTO and Crystal and other performance utilities on this and other SSD drives I have. What I found was that this drive far under-performs every other SSD drive I have (about half as fast as my 128GB SSD that is almost 2 years old now) except with the ATTO benchmark Kingston requires. Why does Kingston require it? Probably because it uses highly compressible data and they have built the firmware/drive/controller combo to perform well with that one tool. Unfortunately, the real world doesn't use highly compressible data all the time nor does your operating system perform its functions just like ATTO. Most pictures, games, and other software already compress data and that will not perform well on this drive (as other perf utils show). I'll add a screen shot of my Crystal Benchmark performance (something I've always found consistent) for your personal comparison.

Bait and Switch

These drives are no longer good! Kingston switched the NAND controllers from async to non-async, making the drives significantly slower. The new versions only get 180MB/s read while the old versions could get 450MB/s +. Simply google for "Kingston V300 bait and switch" to see countless other people disappointed by these drives.

The ATTO benchmark that Kingston uses is unrepresentative of a workload consisting of incompressible data (like audio or video editing).
Relying on a benchmark like that is like Ford saying their new engine with with two fewer cylinders will perform the same as their old one, but only on flat ground.

Referring to their benchmark sheet, scroll down and see the read/write rates at the bottom:

The older 120S drives clearly blow the 120As out of the water. Even WITH compressible data, the write/read speeds are not comparable to the pre-sandforce controller drives. Running a command that writes PURE ZEROS (highly compressible), I achieved write speeds of only 178mb/s (dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024k of=/Volumes/SSD/testfile count=2048).

The only reason this isn't illegal under consumer protection is because Kingston rates these drives using the ATTO benchmark, and "technically" they all meet spec. I have contacted Kingston customer support and I've requested a full refund.

I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. NAND is a flash component while the LSI® SandForce® is the controller which has not changed. Due to NAND having a life span of 12-15 months with newer and smaller geometries being developed, over time the exact same NAND component becomes unavailable. What we ensure is that no matter the exact NAND used in the V300 is that it will meet our advertise specifications. The 450MB/s specification is found testing with ATTO which uses compressible data. We have also included incompressible data transfer rates found when testing with CyrstalDiskMark or AS SSD in our datasheet, found here: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/sv300s3_us.pdf . Both the synchronous and asynchronous versions of the V300 will meet or exceed all of those specifications. If you are looking for a speed upgrade for you computer, take a pass on this SSD. A typical SATA 3 SSD should be able to handle around 500MB/s read and write speeds.Read more
