I run Linux and this works as expected. Very useful in laptop repair, no need to open a desktop system to plug-in a SATA disk any more. I should have gotten this a long time ago.

With the architecture of a new computer and an Intel i3 processor, changing from a 5400 rpm hard drive to this SSHD makes my laptop boot Windows 7 in seconds. Opens and closes programs in a flash. I have a large Toshiba with 2 drive bays and the second drive has a 500 GB drive, so I have enough storage on-board. Still, it would be nice if this speedy drive gave more storage for the buck. Someday the 256 GB ones will cost what this 128 GB one costs now. Comes with software that makes installation easy, or Norton Ghost works as well.

I installed the 128GB version of the Kingston SSDNow drive as the system drive in my Gateway desktop system with AMD 4 core processor and 8 GB memory. The SSD drive made a very significant improvement in start up time and in all other activities requiring I/O from the C: drive. About 3 weeks after installation I started up the system and received the dreaded message that the bootmgr could not be found. I reconnected the drive using a different set of internal connections with no success. The drive acted like it was not receiving power. It did not even show up in the BIOS device list. I then mounted the drive in an external eSATA drive enclosure and connected it to a different system. Same result: BIOS did not recognize another drive was mounted.

I have returned the drive to Amazon and promptly received a full refund. Great service as usual from Amazon.

Maybe this unit was a lemon. Maybe the technology is not quite mature enough for dependable use. I intend to purchase another SSD drive... in about 6 months.

First, be aware that this product is not compatible with RAID drives...apparently any configuration of RAID drive, or so it says in the installation manual. Second, though both Amazon and Kingston advertise that 24/7 phone support is available for this product, that is NOT the case. Kingston SSDNow drives are not included in the Kingston tech support phone menus, and if you find a way to get through to the operatoer, she will tell you that she is aware that Kingston advertises 24/7 support, but it is not available. You will be directed to call back during normal business hours, and remember that you will have to game the phone system even then, because the Kingston SSDNow drive is not included in the Kingston tech support phone menus. Amazon has agreed to pay return shipping and refund the full cost of the product and shipping, which is excellent customer service. They get an A. Kingston gets an F.

For all those of you who are having dead drives, it looks like a major firmware goof up. Apparently, the drives dies because of a firmware problem and is being acknowledged openly by Kingston.

So if you buy this drive, upgrade the firmware two minutes after you open the package and before you do any work on it. It will ensure that you use the SSD for many years to come.

Having said that, the SSD is surely good value for money and is very fast.

Bought this for use as the primary system drive for installing the OS. For the price it's real fast. Only drawback I can say goes for all SSD's in general - the price. Hard to justify what you would spend for a 2TB 3.5" drive, on a 64GB drive. Hopefully, in time, prices will come down & drive capacities will go up. On a side note I should add that though the write speeds seem a bit on the slow side on paper (around 140 mbps), realistically this is not a problem - at least for me. Right from boot up to shut down every response is instant. This includes working with heavy weights like photoshop, dreamweaver, IDE's like eclipse, games (nfs - hot pursuit 2010) etc. The reason for this I think is, since it's my primary drive, apart from the OS installation, data is mostly being read from it, not written to.
Oh & I forgot to mention ... it has TRIM (works with Windows 7 & BIOS controller mode set to AHCI), NCQ, & APM. It doesn't have AAM which isn't needed anyway since it's an SSD & so has no moving parts & is totally silent.
Finally the most important part:
Kingston's site says you need to install the firmware update for specific drive S/Ns to prevent sudden death of the drive ! For anyone interested, the link is:

All in all I'm thrilled with my purchase. Hope you'll be too !
