So I bought this a little over (3) years ago. Installed it in my Desktop PC that I use for gaming. I had an SSD (128 GB) already installed and it was rapidly running out of memory with Windows 8.1 installed. So I paid around $500.00 for this one and installed it. I had a lot of difficulty getting my BIOS to recognize it. After about a week of messing with it I finely got it to work sort of. The firmware update also had trouble finding the SSD on my PC. What a hassle. Eventually I kind of forgot about even having it in as I wasn't using my PC much (selling my house, moving to another state, buying another house, yada, yada, yada) Anyway, a friend and I began Multiplayer gaming again and he mentioned he got an SSD in his machine finally and his gaming experience was much improved. This got me thinking about my HyperX again and I discovered it wasn't working. It was not showing up in Disk Management. My BIOS could not detect it, and, even after putting it into the little external drive gizmo that came with it my BIOS would not recognize it and it was essentially "dead." Called Kingston and found out I was "out of warranty" for a couple months so they were not interested in helping with my issue. I got a new SSD from "Intel" which was twice the size (480GB) and half the price. It went in easily and was instantly recognized by my BIOS and works flawlessly. Absolutely no firmware hassles of any kind. Don't recommend the Kingston as they don't last and Kingston not very sympathetic to customer's plight when they do die on you.

Great when working (updated) works now

The good:
I got this SSD to be my boot drive and installed it in my cpu with no problems. Windows 7 went on without a hitch. It increased my windows experience index for hard drive, ram and processor and it seems very fast. The packaging was very good and the build quality seems very solid. With a newer main board capable of sata 6 it would be great. Customer service promptly answered my call with almost no hold time and they spoke good english!

Now for the bad:
I get random BSOD (blue screen of death error screen) since installing. After the BSOD the BIOS does not recognize the SSD in the hardware. In order for it to work again the computer needs to power completely off then back on, reset does not work. Apparently there is a known issue with the Sandforce SF-2281 SSD Controller which runs the drive. Sandforce has apparently released a firmware fix for the issue (version 3.3.2) but Kingston has not updated the firmware for the drive yet. I spoke with customer service at Kingston and was told that a firmware update is in the works and should be live within two weeks or so. (update) Kingston released an update for the firmware and so far it seems to have fixed my problem! I will upgrade the review to a 4.

The adventure:
Take a picture of the label of any product you install in your computer so you do not need to remove it to find info. Kingston requires a number off the drive itself, not just the box to get support. Would be nice if they put a sticker with that info on it in the box also. I have a tech support e-mail sent in and will update once I hear from them. A note on their website letting customers know about the issue and informing us they are working on it with an ETA would have saved hours and hours of wasted time troubleshooting.

Absolutely Awesome Solid State Drive

This review is for the Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD Upgrade Kit, NOT the newer Kingston HyperX 3K.
I bought this SSD because I'd been looking into upgrading to one of these for some time. I had just been waiting for the prices to come down enough. I bought this one when it was $190. After upgrading, I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular hard drive. My laptop is considerably faster, especially with the maxed out RAM (4GB is the max my laptop takes). I am very satisfied with this SSD. Even today, it is still one of the very best SSDs you can buy. It looks cool and the capacity is ample enough for most people. I've had it for a year and had no problems at all. I had considered other top-of-the-line SSDs such as the OCZ Vertez 3. It is very coveted for its speed and awards, but I chose the Kingston HyperX instead because a classmate who works at Best Buy told me Geek Squad kept receiving lots of complaints and support calls related to OCZ SSDs. If you care about brand names, you can't go wrong with Kingston.

Pros:
The ultimate speed-related upgrade you can do to your PC, besides adding more RAM
Lower power consumption on laptops
Shock resistance
Comes in various capacities to suit your needs
Added extras such as a screwdriver and HDD enclosure (the enclosure included with this SSD is outstanding)

Cons:
None! I do wish my laptop had 6GB/s SATA so it could harness the full power of this SSD
120GB may be a bit too small for some people

What's the difference between this SSD and the newer HyperX 3K? Besides the color difference, the 3K is rated to last less than the blue HyperX. Essentially, the blue HyperX is a 5K. Take this into account when purchasing.
Also, to make your SSD last the longest possible, do not treat it like you would a hard drive. That means NEVER defrag an SSD. Doing that only shortens its life. Make sure your computer supports TRIM (all Windows 7/8 PCs should support that). I also recommend using your SSD to store Windows and programs (they are what benefit the most from the speed gain), and store your data on a separate regular hard drive.
