Last card reader was probably 15+ years old won't work with Win 10 on my new laptop. Ordered this to replace so far it works on all of my computers with no issues. Plug and play simply plug it in and the system recognizes it. Like that it handles older CF cards since that is what my digital camera uses. Also like having additional USB B type hubs and 3.0 not 2.0. Most recent laptop has 2 type C and 1 type B which is where the mouse receiver has to go. have to use a converter piece to get it to work with type C plug on that machine. It transfers faster than my old card reader but isn't as fast as I would like. Still it is relatively speedy and I don't transfer a lot of data with it. Seems to work a bit faster on the USB ports than the SD card slot but I would expect that based on the technologies involved. Has a nice heft to it so it sits well on the desktop and doesn't bounce around. comes with a decent length cable with a USB B connector to the computer. Would be nice if it also included one with USB C since it is becoming more prevalent. Compact size not as compact as old card reader but has more slots so worth the little bit of extra size.

Outstanding USB Hub and Card Reader for your Desk!

After much hemming and hawing, I finally settled on this USB Hub/Card Reader combo, and I could not be happier with the outcome. Right out of the packaging, it has a good quality feel in the hand, even more heft than you would expect, and down to the tiny details (including rubber feet to prevent sliding), the fit and finish are all excellent. This device was immediately recognized even by my now-ancient XP Pro machine, and works flawlessly.

For those not aware, you will probably see it enumerate a bunch of drive letters when you initially connect it, at least on an XP machine, but once you "safely remove" each of those like you should with any flash drive (yanking an NTFS formatted flash drive without warning is an especially Bad Thing™) they will not return unless you actually reboot or disconnect and re-connect the hub. That said, it will still pick up any flash drive you plug into it, the way any active USB port would. That's exactly the behavior you would want, and I was extremely happy to see it worked this way.

Additionally, I like the arrangement on this unit, with 3 well spaced USB 3.0 ports across the top, and all the card reader slots below, with reasonable distance between each. Someone clearly put some thought into the arrangement and made it so that you can actually take up more than one slot at a time without bumping your devices/connectors into each other. This is especially evident with those USB ports at the top, because as is often the case, flash drives are on the pudgy side and having ports too close to each other can easily make for a fitment problem.

If I had to ding them for anything, and I don't (so I won't), it would be that maybe having one of the 3 USB-A ports swapped for a USB-C port would make the hub even more versatile. I don't have anything requiring a USB-C port at this time, but some newer flash drives are going this route and it would be good future proofing.

Finally, since it isn't evident anywhere from the product description, I should point out that the cable this comes with is USB A (male) to USB Micro-B (also male), in case you want to purchase something longer. For me, wanting to connect this up with a tower that I have under the desk, I opted to get a separate 6-ft USB 3.0 cable with the aforementioned specs, and it worked perfectly.

For the money spent, I could not be happier with this device. It has exceeded my expectations in every way and I would absolutely buy it again if I needed another. Highly recommended!

I just received this item and overall I'm very impressed with the build quality, and function. I had spent a day looking for usb hubs and I decided to go with this model. I really like how it feels very well made, it has a good weight, and just looks sleek over all. Another aspect is that it uses a micro b cable which in my opinion is a plus. It also has very good read and write speeds for sd cards (couldn't tell you the exact numbers) but it gets the job done for me. Recommend this for anybody looking for both a usb hub and card reader

UPDATE: With a new laptop, the mystery either deepens or may be solved: With my new computer, half of my old USB-3 cables (the same type included with the Kingwin hub, but different brands from Amazon) still didn’t work with the hub, so I threw them out. The other half continued to work only intermittently, so I started searching Amazon again. This time, I ran across a cable with Micro B on one end, but USB-C (instead of USB-3) on the other end (CableCreation USB C to Micro B 3.0 Cable (Gen2/ 10Gbps)). Of course your computer has to be relatively new AND include the USB-C slot, but I just completed my first day with a client with NO pauses to fiddle with the cable. Because there are so many good reviews of the Kingwin hub (including mine!), it may be just a driver/registry anomaly in the brand of laptops I buy. Whatever it is, the USB-C connection seems to have solved it for me for now (and BTW, I have NO connection to CableCreation, except that their product is the only one I’ve found that works consistently).
ORIGINAL POST: Just ordered two more of these, even though I agree with other reviewers who say the cable doesn’t work very well. Here’s why: Like some of those same reviewers, I also find this to be the best unit for speed and variety of slots for my particular needs (when it works!). Moreover, I believe I’ve isolated the problem, and IMO it’s NOT the cable. I’m now convinced that it’s the Micro B slot on the side of this unit which simply loses its “grip” after several months of daily plugging and unplugging as I travel. Along the way, I bought three additional brands of cables, and they all worked at first, but then they all stopped working—until I bought a new hub, and then they all worked again. That second unit will soon be due for a similar Micro B “wear-out,” which is why I’ve ordered two more hubs for future needs. If the newly-ordered hubs have a Micro B connection that lasts longer, I’ll update. Meanwhile, brilliant choices of available slots on the top—worth the workaround!

Acabo de comprar una laptop muy buena, con el único pero de que sólo tiene 2 usb y no tiene lector de memoria SD. Así que este artículo fue un poco "forzado" por la necesidad, pero superó las espectativas. Me agrada precisamente que no es superliviano (tiene el peso justo para que tenga la solidez de trabajo y quedarse dónde lo pones, por eso las 4 estrellas en ese aspecto... porque no es ligero, pero no tiene por qué serlo). El único pero que le puedo encontrar es que el led que señala que se está utilizando, tiene una iluminación muy fuerte, especialmente yo que trabajo en ambientes oscuros, ilumino toda la habitación cuando importo desde la tarjeta de la cámara (nada que un pedacito de cinta de aislar no pueda solucionar).

Es muy buen producto esta pesado, lo que significa que sus componentes son buenos. Modelo discreto y elegante. combina muy bien con una PC. El cable no es de muy buena calidad es grueso y corre a 5gbps. Sin embargo es muy corto mide exactamente 80 cm por lo que queda muy justo y hace interferencia con la señal wifi de mi tarjeta de red hace que se desconecte, es un problema común con este tipo de estaciobes. Le bajo otra estrella porque el puerto para micro sd borra los datos, ya van dos memorias que se me borran

The unit has some heft to it -- doesnt feel cheap. Black rubber soles on the bottom so keep in mind all USB sticks and cards are inserted vertically. I've positioned it on its side so that i can insert it face on. I'm getting 12MB/s with USB 2.0. 60MB/s with USB 3.0. For the non-USB items (ie. SD cards) there is no spring push to insert / release. You just push it in but there is this tighter friction feel so you will know once it is in place. A blue led light comes on once something is inserted and flashes during read/ write. I have been able to access 2 items at once in the system, for instance, if i have a long running task on an SD card then try to access a USB stick i can do so -- it allowed for 2 different activities though i got about 3.5 MB/s copying to the USB 2.0 stick and 11 MB/s copying to the SD card. I haven't tested its limits. The connection for USB or SD card has been stable. So far i'm pleased with the unit.

UPDATE

The MicroB connector that connects on the side of the body starts to bend the port out of place due to gravity causing the USB connection to drop. BAD DESIGN. If you have a unit that is 1 year or older you will know what i mean. If you purchase it new then make sure to SUPPORT the connection so that it does not stress the MicroB connector port otherwise the HUB becomes useless. Perhaps some Blutac beneath the connector as support against gravity could help.

This card reader feels solid, but it's connection to the computer is horrible. I thought it might be the USB cable (which is a rarely used type. However, I happened to have another one of this style cable laying around and it was still an unstable connection.
When transferring files off my memory card, it will often disconnect mid transfer, and I'll have to restart the files that got missed. I'm afraid it'll kill my cards, and I'll loose the videos I'm trying to transfer.
