I have evaluated several bluetooth inexpensive speakers over the last several months, and what I can say.... is that they mostly sound the same. The are louder than you would expect, but they focus on the higher side of the frequency response. The Kinivo BTX180 is a bit surprising - it has a bottom firing subwoofer (they call it a subwoofer, but I think it is more of radiator). It also has 3 EQ settings to help (when needed) to help extend the bass.

Notes-

- Roughly the size of a cylinder shaped tennis ball.

- The EQ settings are a nice feature - on some songs, especially with heavy bass, the lowest of the EQ settings cause the speaker to bottom out and heavily distort. On less bass intensive music it helps to deepen the overall sound response.

- Completely rechargeable - it charges through a 5V USB cable (which is included).

- Multiple Kinivo BTX180 speakers can be daisy-chained together.

- I am not a big fan of the blue light that flashes when the speaker is being used.

- Pairs very easily with bluetooth enabled devices

- The speaker is able to *talk* and can tell you when you are paired... it is being turned off, and such.

The Kinivo BTX180 wireless speaker is just one of many small, decent sounding bluetooth speakers in the marketplace. This one does have some interesting characteristics and features that set it apart in some ways from others. Unfortunately it also has some characteristics I did not particularly like. My rating is 4 but it is probably closer to 3.5 because of the various things I did not particularly enjoy. Just considering sound alone with none of the cons, it's a solid 4.

In addition to the speaker, a 3.5mm audio cable and Micro-USB charging cable is provided.

Specifications:

Bluetooth Version: 4.0
Bluetooth Profiles: A2DP/AVRCP/HFP/HSP
Music Play Time: 4-5 hours
Frequency Range: 100Hz-20kHz
Speaker Output Power: 3W
Size: 2.75" diameter, 2.4" height

The BTX180 is a bit larger, though not by much, than many similar shaped speakers in this price range. Notably it is a bit taller to accommodate an interesting "subwoofer" that radiates the low frequency sounds from below the top firing speaker.

Another feature that really gives this some additional oomph on the bottom end is a 3-mode EQ. You have a Normal mode, Bass mode and Treble mode. For most listening, I prefer the Bass mode. To me, the Treble mode takes away too much of the lower frequencies and boosts the treble too much resulting in a very thin sound that is harsh on my ears.

Volume is decent for a speaker of this size.

The speaker is charged via an included USB to Micro-USB cable. You are also able to use the Aux In port to hook up a non-bluetooth device to play through the speaker.

There are a few things that I do not like about the BTX180:
The hands-free capability of the speaker is a mixed bag.

This speaker is truly amazing. I ordered it after seeing the reviews from others after doing a lot or research on other speakers. I wanted something I could use at work with my laptop that was not bulky or have a bunch of wires. From the minute i synced the speaker to my computer and started streaming Pandora both I and everyone else in hearing distance was blown away by the quality of sound for such a small speaker. I work in a lab that is pretty load with tools running and when this speaker is maxed out I can hear it clearly from 30 feet away. There is no buzzing and it has decent bass and treble response. For such a small package you can't beat this speaker. I am super happy with it and it was well worth the ~30 I spent for it.

Amazing sound. Period. I could not believe how loud this speaker is compared to other mini speakers I have had in the past. I also just purchased a $65 android dock and I prefer this bad boy. I really enjoy having some controls on the speaker itself also. I can plug my phone into the charger and just keep this speaker next to me wherever I go in the house. I can change tracks, pause/play, and adjust volume as needed.

Now.....onto the annoyances. There is a female voice that announces when you turn the device off and on, when you start pairing to a device, and when you connect to a device. I wouldn't mind this so much if it wasn't spoken at the loudest volume possible! I point the speaker away from me whenever I am doing one of these functions. The voice is rather pleasant but I have grown to hate it. And there is no way to turn it off. The next bother is the flashing light. Usually a speaker would have a flashing light to inform the user what mode it's in. Odd thing is there is already an obnoxiously loud voice telling you what mode you're in already so why the light? It only produces fast flashes, it is not a steady light. And it doesn't stop at informing you what mode you're in. Once you're connected and playing music, it will continue to flash once about every 10 seconds. You will find this most frustrating when using the speaker at night. It is very bright and YOU WILL notice it. I have the speaker next to me while studying (I like background noise) and the light constantly grabs my attention. I always set it behind something so I can't see it. And that is during the day when there are plenty of other lights! That's how bright this thing is.

I rate this 4 stars because the sound quality and loudness really is that good. I got this because I had a promo code that reduced it to twenty dollars. So worth it to put up with the two annoyances!
