Only one of the 3 DVD's is worth having in this bunch.However,on that one(interviews with band members and Dave Davies,the ultra-heavy English accents of the speakers is difficult to understand at times.The other 2 DVD's duplicate the performances and the commentary of the other people on the discs is very much meaningless.Rating their hits and saying what millions of people have said millions of times doesn't seem very entertaining.I was not impressed with this DVD pack.

Disc 3:
Listening to people gush about the Kinks is something I can get from my friends and it would be way more interesting. Watching a session man play riffs on an acoustic guitar to explain song structure was painful. After talking about each song, they put up their star rating, which is insulting. This is one 49 minute track of gushing bores.

Je ne vous dirai pas si j'ai aimé ce triptyque kinksien, parfois il faut savoir cultiver son jardin secret! (surtout quand on s'est mis au vert dans un village préservé).

Séance de rattrapage: bon, je l'ai payé 3,72€ ce coffret de 3DVD, pas de quoi se plaindre. Sauf que je n'ai pas vu qu'il n'y avait pas de sous-titres (ni français, ni même anglais).

DVD 1: une histoire des Kinks vue par les membres du groupe (sauf Ray Davies et Peter Quaife). Ca a l'air super intéressant, pas très gai, mais ils ont un accent impossible pour moi et je n'y ai pas compris grand chose (par exemple à un moment ils disent que John Dalton, le bassiste, avait d'abord appris la guitare, mais je n'ai pas réussi à savoir si c'était un défaut ou une qualité).

Très frustrant!

DVD 2: retransmissions live à la télévision. Est-ce du live intégral? En Angleterre, c'est plutôt une tradition, mais certains passages avec cuivres sans micros peuvent laisser supposer le contraire. Tous les grands tubes des Kinks sont passés en revue (sauf Sunny Afternoon). C'est assez kitsch dans l'ensemble, l'émission où ils jouent sur une "estrade-échafaudage" transparente à plusieurs étages est assez gratinée.

C'est néanmoins très intéressant pour le côté "décalé" (les fringues! Par moment Ray Davies ressemble totalement à Mike Brandt). Mais l'on se prend au jeu, même si parfois certaines interprètations Ray Davies-Gosling au piano frisent un peu la variétoche.

DVD 3: revue critique des singles et albums période 1964-1970 et 1971-1978. Les intervenants doivent être connus en Angleterre (musicien de studio, producteur, critique, animateur radio). Ils se livrent au jeu amazonien des cinq étoiles (plutôt 5 et 4 première période et 2 à 3 pour la seconde). Même si l'on comprend mieux les intervenants que dans le premier DVD, la signification de certains mots m'a échappé (great, finest, good rocker, excellent, etc...).

Un coffret que je conseille à tous fans des Kinks maîtrisant très bien la langue de Margaret Thatcher.

Schade, das Konzept dieses 3-DVD-Box-Sets hätte viel mehr hergegeben: Im ersten Teil erzählt die Band ihre Geschichte selbst, im zweiten wird die Kinks-Story anhand von TV- und Bühnenauftritten mit ihren wichtigsten Songs erzählt, und im dritten Teil die Musik der Kinks von kompetenten Kritikern beleuchtet.
Leider aber ist jeder der drei Teile schlecht umgesetzt: Ray Davies, der unstrittig wichtigste Mann der Kinks, kommt im ersten Teil gar nicht vor, ebenso fehlen Peter Quaife, Jim Rodford und andere. Der zweite Teil begnügt sich mit mageren 39 Minuten und gerade mal 11 Songs. Teil drei schließlich lässt leider nur die zweite Garde der englischen Musikjournalisten zu Wort kommen, deren Urteil denn auch 1.) einen spezifisch englischen Blick offenbart, der den Kinks vor allem ab Mitte der siebziger Jahre kaum noch gerecht wird, und 2.) mit dem Jahr 1978 abbricht, als die Band gerade in den Startlöchern zu ihrer zweiten Karriere saß, die ihnen noch einige satte Erfolge, vor allem in den USA, und sogar wieder Hits bescherte.
Obendrein ist das Ganze lieblos und langweilig präsentiert, die Ausstattung der DVDs ist karg, keine Untertitel, nichts.
Auf eine umfassende Filmdokumentation, die dieser wunderbaren Band und ihrer langen, turbulenten Geschichte gerecht wird und in der alle Beteiligten zu Wort kommen, müssen wir leider weiterhin warten.

Eine grandiose Annäherung an die Kinks. Höhepunkt die DVD 1 mit Interviews der KINKS-Veteranen Avory, Dalton & Gosling. Nicht zu vergessen: der kleine Bruder Dave, der hier mal ganz frei sprechen darf - ohne Big Brother Ray...
Einziger Klops auf den DVDs: Diverse der Beat Club - Originalaufnahmen werden statt bei Radio Bremen bei einem ominösen "Radio Hamburg" verortet. Das ist ungefähr so ekelhaft, als würde man den HSV mit Werder Bremen gleichsetzen... Ansonsten aber eine großartige Dokumentation. Dazu kann man übrigens sehr gut die Biografie lesen, die Thomas Kitts just in diesem Jahr in den USA veröffentlicht hat.
