This book takes a different turn, and Kumai is going to get a huge return on her investment. She took a series of trips to Japan to speak with family and experts on Japanese philosophy. While she got to tap into her roots, and repair from her own grief and loss, we yield the benefits of her gained wisdom (all without the high ticket price and jet lag). Oh, and you still get great recipes (matcha scones are going to happen this weekend!).
Kintsugi is about repair. We've all felt broken at one point or another, but I think we need to think beyond the self-care of bubble baths and face masks. Being broken isn't easy- it's tears shed, drinking too much, and losing who you are. We all have a story like Kumai's, but we have to do the hard work to fill in the cracks of our broken shell (and fill them with gold, honey!). In this book she shares her framework, but we have to be the ones to apply it, in whatever way suits you and your upbringing, spiritual beliefs, etc.

Last year, as my Mom and I were on a trip together and we took a walk through a forest. We were so happy and relaxed, and she said "Did you know that the Japanese have a word that literally means forest bathing?". As interesting as I learning that was, I can't say I was that surprised. Although my knowledge of Japan and its people was pretty minimal, I knew that the Japanese seemed to view life differently than what I am used to be surrounded by in the US. There is an aura of peace, well-being, and optimism around them, even though they have endured a lot throughout history. I wanted to learn more.
Almost immediately after returning from my trip, Candice announced she was releasing a book about Japanese wellness, and I knew I had to get it.
And it did not disappoint. Part of it is a story - her own and her family's - mixed in with Japanese wellness tips & ideologies, approachable recipes, and Japan travel pointers.
