which is also awesome. Overall

The product was the German version, not the USA version as advertised. Aside from that, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the product. Not only was the amiibo itself topnotch, but the box was impeccable, as well! A plus for any collector, especially since this is usually why I stay away from ordering collectables online. It arrived two days earlier than expected, which is also awesome. Overall, very satisfied with my purchase. :)

These amiibo never really interested me when they first came out, but at some point I finally got taken by the hype and tried one out. My collector's OCD quickly kicked in and here I am now trying to collect them all.

It took me awhile to figure out how they actually work, so hopefully I can help others make sense of it all. First of all, if you want to actually use them, and not just collect them, you'll need to take them out of the box because there is a metal square in the packaging that prevents the NFC chip from being read through the packaging. Curse you, Nintendo! You'll also need an amiibo-compatible game and console.

*Kirby*
Here is Kirby's current compatibility across amiibo-enabled Wii U/3DS games:
Super Smash Bros. (Wii U/3DS) - Read+write - Train and fight your amiibo to level it up, each battle your amiibo is in earns you extra coins & items.
Mario Kart 8 - Read only - Tap once to permanently unlock a Kirby outfit for use while playing as your Mii character.
Hyrule Warriors - Read only - Tap once per day to get a weapon rated 3 stars or lower, or rupee/crafting material bonus.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - To be announced
Mario Party 10 - To be announced
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - To be announced
Yoshi's Woolly World - To be announced

*Read/write*
It's important to understand how these work. You can save data from an amiibo-compatible game to your amiibo figure itself. But you can only save one game data to it. At the moment, the only game that actually writes to amiibo is Smash Bros. The other games just read from it to unlock items without saving anything back to the amiibo. But as more read+write games come out, you will have to decide which game to tie your amiibo to. You can always delete the data on your amiibo, so if you change your mind on which game to use it for, it's not a big deal. You will just need to wipe it clean and start over. For read-only games, you can use the amiibo to full effect while it is storing data for another game. For example, all my amiibo have Smash Bros data saved to them, but I could also still use them afterwards for unlocking Mario Kart 8 outfits.

*Quality*
These are actually very impressive quality-wise. They have very detailed molding and painting and are really not a bad deal for $12.99. Some of them come with some imperfections, however. My Samus has a side-leaning stance that looks kind of stupid, and Link has a bent sword, ha. But for the most part, they look fantastic.

*Rarity*
Unfortunately, it appears some amiibo quickly ceased production, though this was never officially confirmed by Nintendo. Unless they decide to make another run of older amiibo, this leaves some of them being quite rare (such as Villager/Wii Fit Trainer/etc). So if you want to get them all, you'll need to spend a lot of money to get the older ones, and make sure to pre-order the new waves before they become scarce. I certainly think they make for a fun hobby trying to collect at the $12.99 MSRP each, but definitely don't think they are really worth $30-60 each that some of them are going for now.

So overall, they definitely make for a fun gameplay extension for the games they are compatible with. But fortunately, they are absolutely *not* required to fully enjoy any game since they play very minor roles in the games. I personally enjoy them more for the collectibility aspect. So I will leave it to you to decide if they are worth buying and how you use them. I am definitely enjoying my amiibo collection so far, and look forward to the ones yet to come. Good luck trying to catch 'em all!

*Summary*
Pros:
[+] High production quality
[+] Fun to collect
[+] Gives you great in-game bonuses/items/perks
[+] Not required to fully enjoy any game

Cons:
[-] Rarity on some amiibo makes it difficult/expensive to collect them all
[-] NFC chip can't be read without removing amiibo from packaging

Quite frankly, I haven't even used it yet on my copy of Smash, so I won't even talk about the game aspects of this.

I like to collect figures such as Nendoroid and Cu-Poche and I'd be comfortable stating that if someone were to buy this for the figure alone, the price is quite worth it. It may not be up to the same level as the Good Smile stuff, but then again, at one-third to one-fifth of the cost, I wouldn't expect the same feature set that other collectible figures have (no interchangeable parts, etc). And for $13, it's of higher quality than any capsule toy you'd collect at the same price. It is not very heavy, but the build quality is gret, it feels solid and has a very nice paint job. It would be quite at home sitting on my Nendo display shelf. I've also picked up Link, and undoubtedly will pick up a few more.

If you understand the capabilities of this little gadget it's pretty great. When I heard of these I initially thought it logged personal stats and was a way to compete with friends, but it's actually it's own entity, leveling up and growing stronger while you play with it. In general at the highest levels it is quite strong and quite the challenge for your average smash player. Thankfully there is a level cap or this amiibo would take over the world.

The only downside is remembering to sync the amiibo so you don't lose any progress. Also, we have yet to figure out how to unlock new moves or gear. Not enough to knock off a star though.

I actually bought this and the other Amiibo figures to just have them as figurines, since i don't have a WiiU yet.
So this review won't be based on their functionality as useable figures. I hope to get a WiiU soon, since Smash is my absolute favorite game.
Not much extra detail can really be done on Kirby (unless of course they put him in one of his powers), but it is still detailed enough. The figure has the little dark pink cheeks, his eyes are the right three colors and the shoes (feet?) are also correct. Plus, Kirby just looks so innocent sitting there, plotting and planning to keep on floating back to the stage no matter how many time you smash move him off.
I like having it just to be used as a figurine until i get the game. I would recommend this if either you have Smash for the WiiU or if you are just a fan and want to have a collection of your favorite characters.

Recently bought this Kirby amiibo for my cousin and named it Bubbles , but I don't know what he or we did, but it's fighting style is so bizarre and effective. It fights by just dodging your moves like the matrix, and then just destroys you slowly by running to the edge of the map and waiting for you to come. It's also practically impossible to touch it or grab it, the only way I can damage it is if I wait 2 minutes for it to slowly creep its way to me. But in general great figure, amazing design (which is very smooth), and is satisfying to look at, just every now and then it's kind of scary knowing that this little innocent figure can crush you and destroy you in smash.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than just an Amiibo...

I expected a plastic statue vaguely resembling a classic video game character with an NFC chip in the base of this child's toy.

What I received was something far greater than I could have ever expected.

The Kirby Amiibo I received was so lifelike, so filled with hope as he gazes upward toward the starry sky outside my bedroom window.

His warmth and joy fills a void in me, where friendship should reside. The night of his unboxing, on his perch by my bed, a shooting star shot across the sky, and I wished with all my heart for Kirby to come to life and be my best buddy forever.

The next morning, I awoke to discover that my wish had come true! My best friend had come to life! My best buddy Kirby. Once I got over the initial shock, we were inseparable. We did everything together. We had Power Rangers marathons, I was backstage when Kirby had his interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, my little buddy was even the best wingman a guy could ask for. People would come up to us on the street and ask Kirby for autographs, which was really cool. Kirby was always ready to give time to a fan. There was this one weird dad though and his greedy kid who thought they could buy Kirby from me. They even gave me their number and address in case I changed my mind. HA! Like I would EVER sell my best buddy like that. Never.

Then it happened.

I met someone. We dated for a few years, and I had to leave my best buddy on his own, or else I'd lose the love of my life. It was terrible. I mean, who should have to choose between their best buddy and the love of their life?

Kirby spiralled. I could see it all over his marshmallowy face. He said he was cool with it, but I could see he was deflated. Paparazzi chronicled his downward spiral, and he wouldn't take my calls. I had to read about his pain from the tabloids: all-night benders, the restraining order fiasco with Emma Stone, his struggle to hold down his job at our local grocery store...

I tried to get him back. I tried. I crashed a house party he was throwing at his place. All of his celebrity bad influences were invited: T-Pain, James Franco, Will Ferrell, even Amy Jo Johnson was there! The pink ranger! THE pink ranger! I had only planned on staying for a little while, you know, to talk to my best buddy. But I had so many questions for Amy Jo: "Did you really fight all those putties?", "Was it hard to breathe in that helmet?", "If your Flashpoint character Jules had a power morpher, do you think she could have avoided being shot by that sniper in the episode 'Between Heartbeats'?"

Kirby and I were best buds again, like nothing had ever happened. We lost track of the night as we karaoke-hopped from bar to bar with Amy Jo and Franco, indulging reprisals of "Video Killed the Radio Star" for our drunken fans.

My girlfriend was livid. She told me that Kirby was ruining my life, and she broke up with me.

I tried to talk to Kirby about his behaviour, and my need to grow up, but my words weren't coming out the way I meant them, and we fought. Hard. He took every punch I threw at him. He swallowed book after book from my screenwriting resources bookshelf and spit them at me. 'Save the Cat' caught me behind the ear and split my earlobe. I grabbed him by the arm and he tried to float away, but only ended up swinging myself into my tv. I cracked the screen with my forehead and collapsed to the ground.

That's when Kirby swallowed me.

I struggled and fought, but there was no escape. Like a rocket, he spat me out, and I careened into the wall. I wiped the blood from my eyes and looked up to see my buddy. My best buddy. Looking down at me with a flowing head of wavy red hair. Just like mine.

"You wanna play Smash Bros?" Kirby yelled. We both froze. Kirby was as surprised by the words coming out of his mouth as I was.

"You wanna play Smash Bros? You wanna play Smash Bros?"

That's all Kirby could say. Which meant...

That's all I said. That was who I was. That was me. That was all I had to offer Kirby for strength. Tears streamed down my cheeks.

It was then that Kirby showed me that it wasn't his fault I couldn't grow up. It was mine.

Kirby squished himself, and his mane of red hair disappeared from his head. We sat together in silence, crying apologetic tears for one another. We hugged it out like the Amiibros we were.

We parted as friends, promising to find a way to balance our friendship with our respective lives, and I went home to try to reconcile with the love of my life. I had practiced my speech the whole way to her apartment. I had it down, but before I could say a word, she showed me a news report saying that Kirby had been kidnapped! I knew immediately who had done it. That creepy dad must have stolen Kirby to complete his kid's Amiibo collection!

My girlfriend and I booked it over to creepy dad's house (I remembered he jammed his address in my pocket, that moron) but by then trusty ol' Kirby had managed to escape their house and make a break for it, with creepy dad chasing after Kirby! We high-tailed it after creepy dad all the way to Fenway Park, where the stadium was closed for the evening. Kirby climbed up some scaffolding to get away from the guy, but the creepy dad grabbed him and tugged Kirby's base off, sending my best bud tumbling to the ground in pieces.

The cops showed up and arrested the dad, but the damage had been done. My girlfriend and I rushed Kirby home to try to repair him. We hot-glued his base back on and waited in fear for the glue to cool and bring him back to us. He wasn't moving. He wasn't sucking anything up. And worst of all, the Wii U wasn't loading any of Kirby's save data. That kid must have wiped Kirby's chip clean...

My best buddy, my Amiibro, was gone.

The next morning, I checked on Kirby and logged onto Amazon to see if I could get help from their customer service team. Unfortunately, the rep I spoke to told me they had no shooting stars in stock and were currently on back-order, so I was out of luck.

I wept at my keyboard.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw him move. I turned. I stared. I couldn't breathe...

Kirby gasped to life. I was beside myself. I started yelling and cheering and my girlfriend rushed in, and for the first time since the three of us met, we were a family. The three Amiibros. (She still doesn't like it when I call us that, but she gets what I mean.)

My girlfriend and I got married. Kirby's living a great life, being recently promoted from cashier to store manager of the supermarket he works at, and once a week, we go out for Karaoke, and we destroy "Video Killed the Radio Star" together. As Amiibros.

Five stars. 10/10 Would wish for again.
