Very, very good. Rusch has always written good stories, but even this is on a new level

First and foremost this novel is a wonderfully complex and nuanced detective story, full of highly imaginative scenes, plots and surprises (yea!). I have not read any of the preceding 8 novels in the Fey series but I'm going to check them out now as this new related series is compelling. We're all familiar with the dancing, glowing, magical, beautiful Fey. Yada, yada. These are not those Fey. These are multi layered, sometimes ugly, with different abilities, and as many shortcomings and frailties as any of us. And they have met their match with the main characters, who are not Fey. Finally. The detectives and other main characters also have latent magical abilities, which they oftentimes don't realize they have until needed, and in a culture that doesn't like magic. This makes for great imaginative surprises. Thankfully, Rusch doesn't hint or blatantly state a surprise is coming, like so many authors do. Her storytelling suddenly smacks you over the head and leaves you rushing to absorb it all, then read the scene again, just for that satisfying feeling of having experienced a wonderful story line. I really want/need the next book(s) in this series. I have to admit that I bought this when it was published but wasn't ready to read it for months as the cover art just didn't do it for me, and it was about the Fey. Yeah, I do often judge a book by its cover. And another book about the Fey. Meh. I bought it because it's from Rusch and something about a detective story. I couldn't be happier to have totally misjudged it. it's disappointing that so few have read it, based on the number of reviews. But if you've gotten this far in researching if you should read it, be assured you'll be very happy you put down the coin for it.
