In this short in The Pact series, we are introduced to a world where humans have contracted with Vampires for blood offerings in return for protection from the ever-increasing Demon attacks. New vampires are chosen from the residents willing to sacrifice their human lives for an eternity as a demon-fighting vampire.
Deidra is the first to be chosen from her village in many years, her sire's favorite childe Tristen is tasked with training her and teaching her the vampire way. Deidra can't give up her belief that vampires can love, for eternity, in fact she is in love with Tristen. When a failure of battle tactics lead to Deira's village being destroyed by demons, she disappears.
The emotion and story in this short are well-crafted and engaging, you will be drawn in into the world of Kallysten's creation and find this an entirely wonderful escape. A short in The Pact series, it is a perfect complement to the series, and I'm planning to read all of the books.
I received an ARC copy from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
When the Master Vampire, Cayleen comes to the village that Deidra resides in, she is chosen as the Childe from that village. This forms the Pact that the vampires make with the humans to protect them from the demons.
Deidra is strong in her own way, but weak in her Sire's eyes. She has always wanted a family, and children of her own, however she is not able to have any of that. So she has decided to become a vampire so that she can protect all the children of the village. She has trained with the best, Tristen, to becomes the best fighter she can be against the demons that flood the world and to keep the humans safe.
When a mistake happens and Diedra's village is left in ruins it pushes Deidra to take action against her Sire she leaves for good.
Tristen has been a bed mate to Deidra form years now, and even though vampires are told they can not love, he has loved Deidra almost from the start. I really hate how the Masters tell their Childe that they can not love, that vampires do not love or know love. They can, they just deny it because that is what they are told.
Tristen goes and finally finds Deidra, she is hidden far away in the forest with the children that all survived from her home village. However he might be too late in finding her, for the children all tell him that she is dead....
I really liked this story. and although all of the books in this series can be stand alone, its good to read them all so that you are more familiar with the world and the background.
Thank you Kallysten for giving me a arc in exchange for a review.
