Dear Mr. Rice,
We need to talk…
First of all, fantastic start to a book, It’s not often that I get goose bumps from only reading the first page of a book, but yet, here we are.
Secondly, I find candles pointless, I have a mild disdain for poetry and I don’t believe in ghosts. Why am I telling you this? Because I believe that you may just have magical powers of your own and you need to be investigated. Somehow you made me love all three of the above. Your book was magnificently written, it read like poetry. The lyrical flow of your words pulled me into this mysterious ghostly world and left me with a sense of delicious melancholy and impending doom.
And then you made me laugh. And I was lost.
Full disclosure, I underestimated you. I didn’t think I would fall in love with your characters. I didn’t think I’d fall in love with your world. I didn’t think I’d be fascinated with the little titbits you stuck in. I didn’t think you’d be capable to capture my emotions the way you did with your brilliant descriptions of the character’s interaction. I didn’t expect to say: “OMG I know EXACTLY what that feels like.” Lastly, I prefer my fictional men with filthy mouths and grabby hands and my erotica messy and dirty, I didn’t expect to be affected by your brand of sophisticated smut but yet again, here we are.
What you wrote here is Erotic Romance. I expected mommy porn from start to finish, but what I got was SO much better. I got a slow burn with tangible anticipation between two (adorably awkward) people with just enough angst and humour. I furiously devoured this book.
So, here are some words I never thought I’d say: Mr Rice, please accept my humblest apologies for underestimating you.
You told me what would happen right at the beginning of the book, but I didn’t listen. So, here are some more words I never thought I’d say: Mr Rice, I need more ghost sex.
Sincerely, your newest fan

Quick & Dirty: Kiss the Flame is a steamy, seductive look at love and romance. The paranormal world of ghosts, immortals and candles really intrigued me.

Opening Sentence: We see ghosts every day; we just don’t realize it.

The Review:

Kiss the Flame is a steamy and seductive look at love and romance. It is not often that an author can surprise me with their take on the paranormal. This was my first taste of Christopher Rice and I don’t want to stop reading. I do have quite a few of his books on my TBR pile and now I really want to dig them out to see what else I’ve been missing. I haven’t been this sucked into a story in a long time, let alone a short story.

Laney Foley is in love but unfortunately it is with a teacher’s aide. She can’t act on her feelings while he is teaching her a class, it might jeopardize her scholarship. Laney can come up with every reason to not go out with her gorgeous teacher but he certainly makes it hard on her. Michael Brouchard is a man who has learned a hard lesson about waiting for love so he certainly isn’t waiting around to let Laney know about his feelings. But Laney has so many hang-ups about Michael, relationships and life that she just can’t get her head around what is happening to her. She is waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it does in a way, with a small candle shop hidden on the very fringes of the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Laney meets a mysterious man at the candle shop who says that all her fears and hang-ups will disappear if she follows the directions on the candle. A candle that smell just like the young man that she is in love with. Laney doesn’t quite believe her anxieties will just disappear with a candle so she holds off on lighting it.

Christopher Rice continues his Desire Exchange series with Kiss the Flame, a novella that can stand alone, but builds on the world explored in the first two installments, The Flame and The Surrender Gate. No longer a newcomer to Rice’s erotic voice, I had high expectations for a captivating and sexy read and I was not disappointed. Laney Foley is an art history student from a disadvantaged background. She’s been known to have a bit of a chip on her shoulder and is just starting to settle down and realize that she’s been unapproachable. The biggest distraction? Her sexy as sin teaching assistant, Michael Brouchard. The feeling is mutual and it’s only a matter of time before they’re looking at violating the teacher/student boundary. After a first date in the French Quarter that proves to Laney that Michael is as wonderful as she could have imagined, she spots a candle shop that draws her with a magnetic pull. There’s something about the candle offered to her and the shop owner that raise the hairs on the back of her neck. It’s more than it appears. Will she give in to its pull or will she resist, heading the warning of the mysterious and beautiful Lilliane?

Christopher Rice knows how to write an atmospheric erotic story like no other. I’ve said it before, but New Orleans comes alive in his writing. You can feel every nuance of the city pulsing within the pages. Laney is a character that made my heart ache. She’s strong and accomplished, all without her family’s support. She has a lot to lose and I didn’t blame her for being cautious about embarking on a relationship with her teacher. Michael is beautiful and witty and most importantly, genuinely all in.
