--One Sentence Summary--
Psy Sienna Lauren has wanted SnowDancer Alpha, Hawke, ever since her family's defection from the Net but he's always maintained distance -- until now.
--What are the Issues--
Hawke was a young pup when he found his mate and though they were only friends in their innocent youth, he knew they would grow into their love. So he was devastated when she was killed in an accident and he's grown up sure that he would never have a mate. He's used this distance to keep Sienna away because Hawke knows he's too old, jaded, and alpha for a young woman who grew up in a cage. Sienna was taken in by Ming Lebon as a young child when her cardinal power manifested as X-Fire. She's maintained ruthless control over every part of her life but Hawke makes that control shake. Sienna isn't interested in anyone else but she's not sure if she can handle the possessiveness of Hawke's wolf and her own power without something breaking.
--What I Liked and Didn’t Liked--
The Collapse of Silence -- This series has been building up to the fall of Silence and the separation of the Psy Council and this books has some very interesting developments in this story arc. I love how complex this series has gotten as the world has changed and started pushing at the edges of the accepted parameters. Things are really starting to amp up with the Psy and I can't wait to see where this goes. We also got more of the BlackSea changeling "pack" and I'm really excited to have some water changelings! I'm absolutely fascinated by this concept.
The Mating Bond -- Nalini Singh always writes an emotional story and Kiss of Snow is no exception, especially when it comes to Hawke and Sienna's romance. I wasn't sure how things would work out considering Hawke lost his mate as a child. It was obvious how deeply Sienna loves and she knew she couldn't stay away from Hawke even if she would never have all of him. Not only do they have their pasts creating obstacles but they have outside forces like Pure Psy and Ming creating problems. There was a lot of push and pull from Hawke and his possessive behavior is by far the strongest of any changeling Singh has written so far. Because of this, he tweaked my nerves every once in awhile, especially in the beginning before he gives into a relationship, but you can't doubt his devotion to the people he cares about.
Walker and Lara -- We also get a side romance with the Lauren family patriarch, Walker, and SnowDancer's healer, Lara. Walker has been a bit of a mystery man throughout as we've gotten to know the other Lauren family members. So I was really excited to get more info on Walker because he has that still waters run deep thing going on. He made Lara really work to get him to break his barriers but once he does, oh boy, did I love Walker. His secrets from his time in the Net are so sad and poignant and really reveal the true heart of Walker.
I'm a huge fan of the Psy-Changeling series and they just keep getting better for me. The romance is always deep and emotional, the world building complex, and her character's hope for a better life stirring.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
This is the story I've been waiting for. The sexual tension between Hawke and Sienna is nearly explosive. Hawke doesn't take too long to come around to the decision that his wolf has been pushing him towards - pursue Sienna. It might take a little creativity on Sienna's part, but once he does; Oh boy. There are a few `almost' moments, where Hawke and Sienna's courting is interrupted by everything from injuries to Psy scouting parties to outright attacks, and you could feel the frustration, as well as the responsibility in each of those moments.
Hawke was the same alpha that I've always loved. The alpha who has feral wolves claiming him as their own alpha. In this dangerous war with the Psy, Hawke barely has time to set aside his responsibilities. So he never does. He and Sienna steal small moments, with the help of their Pack, and they don't give up on what they have together.
Learning more about Sienna, and what she has grown up with, what she's grown up expecting - to die before she reaches 25 - was heart-wrenching at times. And yet she always managed to impress me with the way she's managed to become such a strong young woman. She is absolutely more than a match for Hawke. But she's so much more than a perfect match for him, she's a fierce, beautiful, determined, resourceful woman that's not afraid to take chances with her heart, and will protect those she cares about, no matter the cost to herself.
There's an additional side story between Lara, SnowDancer's healer and Walker Lauren. It's an incredibly sweet story that I was happy to read. There's a lot of focus on the Lauren's in general in Kiss of Snow, with more of one of my favorite characters (Judd) showing up quite a bit too.
By now there are around 50 distinct characters that we've met more deeply than passing by in Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling world. She continues to give each of them a voice that is solely their own. They act within their character all the time and are each noticeably different. Combine that with a world that continues to grow while following its own rules and Ms. Singh continues to blow away all my expectations.
Kiss of Snow satisfied every one of my expectations, and then some. It's a sexy, sweet, enthralling story from beginning to end. I literally could not put it down from the moment I started it and was up late into the night inhaling this story. There's no end in sight for my love of Nalini Singh's writing, and I'm eagerly anticipating her next release.
I do agree with other reviewers that the overall writing was choppy and cluttered. I think part of the problem is that the author doesn't seem to know when to just make something a short story or novella and when to add to books. The entire Walker/Lara story line was not needed. It should have been a novella. Hell, it is a novella lol just in a someone else's story. This makes things harder on the Hawke/Sienna story because they're already having to share with other parties to build the invasion assault not to mention random scenes of other characters. Probably one of my biggest complaints with all the breaks is when they tend to happen. You're in the middle of a scene with Hawke/Sienna then cut to a different party for 2-3 pages, then back to Hawke/Sienna. This was a frustrating surprise because normally the author does a better job with the scene cuts. The final battle was also a little anti climatic for me too.
There's also the point of the couple in question. The series has built up Hawke's eventual pairing. To have it share with others was a let down. I would recommend buying it though as the relationship of Hawke and Sienna was enjoyable.
