Ingredients: Chicken stock, chicken flavor, vegetable stocks (carrot, onion, mushroom, celery), honey, bay, thyme, pepper, salt.
or the generic crap you get at the grocery, this is far and away the king of the commercial stocks.
A good stock is the key ingredient in soups, marinades, sauces and is used to flavor veggies like
green beans and potato and rice dishes. This stuff is just perfect for all of the above, especially
for making soups like roasted garlic, white chicken chili, and kitchen sink vegetable soup. It just
doesn't get any better. Available locally for between $3-$4.
One other thing I like about this product is that it is heart healthy, low sodium, and the entire 32oz.
only carries 96 calories with zero fat!
A message to McCormick: people are not stupid. We know that "natural flavor" now listed in the ingredients can be almost anything, including msg. We know that increased salt makes cheaper ingredients easier to disguise. But we are not stupid. I will no longer purchase this product. They say that grocers now call the center of their stores, where the rows of cans and boxes hold sugar and preservative laden foods, "the Dead Zone" because sales in that area are decreasing, while the fresh vegetable sales increase. People are not stupid and when your changes to what was a wonderful, healthy product are discovered by the consumer, you have only yourselves to blame.
Original Ingredients: Chicken stock, chicken flavor, honey, vegetable stocks (carrot, onion, mushroom, celery), bay, thyme, pepper.
McCormick's Ingredients: Chicken Stock, Vegetable Stock (Carrot, Onion, Mushrooms, And Celery), Sea Salt, Natural Chicken Flavor, Honey, Salt, NATURAL FLAVOR, And Spice And Herbs (Black Pepper, Bay Leaf, And Thyme). [emphasis added]
EDIT: I even have doubts the original was 100% kosher. It's been too long to remember for sure.
Luckily, they sell this brand in my local Safeway, although it's not cheap. Depending on if I can get this one sale, buying in bulk from Amazon is often the best deal (if they're offering Prime shipping on it).
From the side panel....
Ingredients: Contains 2 or more: (cod, flounder, pollack, herring and/or salmon), vegetable stocks (onion,
celery, carrot, mushroom, red pepper), natural flavor (from corn), tomato paste.
Amount per serving (4):
Sodium 480 mg
Ya cant make a decent bouillabaisse without this stuff! I much prefer my own shrimp/lobster stock when making
something special, but you cant beat the convenience of these great Kitchen Basics products. And not too much
competition out there for a fish stock, this is pretty much the only game in town.
However, I'd been a bit frustrated as I use a lot of chicken stock and this stock is quite expensive at my grocery store. Purchasing on Amazon is a great option as it's 30 or 40% cheaper, though you are of course ordering in bulk. I use about one of these cartons for a single batch of soup.
