The kitchen safe is the time-lock container designed to help us fight temptations. USA today and time magazine call it "brilliant!" here's how it works: 1) place an item in the kitchen safe 2) rotate the button to set the timer (from 1 minute to 10 days) 3) press the button to activate the lock once locked, the kitchen safe cannot be opened until the timer reaches zero. Seriously, there are no overrides, once it's locked, it’s locked. Studies of highly successful people show that the best strategy for achieving goals is to avoid relying on willpower in all situations. These people are more likely to use something called pre commitment, which significantly improves odds of achieving goals. Pre commitment is the notion of committing to a smart choice early, when we know we will be tempted by a bad choice later. The kitchen safe is a tool that enables us to pre commit to smart choices.

This does the job. Lay it on its side, put in some ice packs and a bowl of wet food, and lock it up. When it times out, the lid falls off with a 'clunk' and the cat comes running. There are a couple of details as shown in the photo: I attached it to a board with adhesive-back Velcro with the opening of the container hanging over the edge, so the cat couldn't knock it around and so it's a bit off the floor (necessary for the lid to fall off). I added bumpers to the lid so it falls with less of a clatter and so the button isn't pushed when it lands. If you're using this for dry food, get the regular, not the XL model; it will have plenty of space and the food won't be pushed out of reach.
There are limitations (after all, it wasn't designed for this). The food stays cool, not cold, even with a towel draped over the container for insulation--about 55 to 60 degrees. It might be possible to insulate it better but the food seems OK after 12 hours. Because it is designed to keep people out, there's no way to unlock it if you make a mistake (like locking it before putting food in!). I leave out dry food just in case something goes wrong. If it were sold as a cat feeder, I'd have given it four stars, but it gets five for being well made and easily adapted to this use.
Once you put something inside the box, it will stay there until the timer counts down. In fact, in case of a failure on the part of the Kitchen Safe, your only option is to break into the box to retrieve your item. The instructions caution you to be careful if you have to break in, since there could be sharp fragments.
Still, what would a timed safe be if you could turn off the timer and get in at will?
There are many practical ways to use this, including time outs on electronics and candy (just don't put your chocolate in there if you aren't willing to wait!). It is large enough for smaller electronics. You can even put the remote control in it and drive someone crazy! And, if you want to limit the temptation at work to respond to texts on your phone, just slip it in there with the timer set for your next break or lunch.
BUT, the most awesome thing I will be using this for is gifts! You can either set the item inside the safe where it can be seen (and drooled over) but not opened, or you can line this with wrapping paper and put the gift inside where a child can watch it count down to a birthday, Christmas, or any special event!
Picture a child counting down the days and hours till Christmas, then hearing it click open to reveal ... whatever you have put inside!
Because it can't be opened till the timer goes off, you can even pack this with the gift and ship it to your college student or child who might otherwise open it early.
Fun - with some very practical applications as well!
EDIT - one of my questions addressed to the company was what happens if the batteries go dead? Apparently, there is a permanent memory chip imbedded that periodically is updated. So when you replace the batteries, they start at the last saved memory.
A second question, I discovered on my own - the timer goes up to ten days.
Still loving it.
It only works if it's used. Not so easy to use and lose that control.
I'm probably going to buy another 2 of these, for other uses after reading some of the other reviews (pet food, gift box for someone who I sense has trouble with temptation but doesn't admit it - this is the main gift with a staged gift inside! They will figure it out and hopefully put it to good use.
Next I would recommend a padlock for locking away things too big to fit in the box. Great product!
