12/27/12 Update: I've used this blender consistently since I wrote my first review and it has not leaked once. Still functions like new. I've only handwashed all the components though, even though I purchased the glass pitcher. Coupler does not show any signs of wear.
Yet, my review is not five stars. The blender does smell like a machine when it runs. Why? My mixer doesn't smell. That makes me suspicious. Also, you have to make sure the glass jar is seated deeply into the base, and even push downward on it when you blend to ensure the gears engage. Otherwise the gears spin and it makes a lot of noise but nothing happens. A perfect blender would allow me to set the jar on, turn it on, and walk away (theoretically; obviously I wouldn't leave a blender blending without supervision!) but this one seems to require hand-holding. Maybe that's normal, maybe not. I am an inexperienced blender owner, so I'll let you decide for yourself. Just the facts, people, just the facts.
The Blender works beautifully. I mainly use mine for smoothies which means ICE! As much as I loved my old Blender, this one works better. The motor is stronger. So, while my smoothies with my old Kitchen Aid often still had pieces left, this one is just like purchasing a smoothie from a Juice bar.
The only thing I can say that I do not like is, when you use the "ice crush" feature-- you HAVE to keep your hand on the top. It will blow the top off! I do this gently because I've learned from experience you will definitely ruin your blender from holding it down too tightly. The other options don't do this, just ice crush.
Short and sweet.............. for the money, this blender is excellent. Does the JOB:)
September 2011: I have used this blender only 6 times since purchasing about 2 weeks ago and it is leaking. The drive shaft connecting the blades to the drive gear is loose and liquid leaks out in this area when blending leaving a mess to clean up under the blender when finished. Disappointed! This part should not be loose after two weeks! Everything else about this Kitchen Aid Blender seems well made and meets my expectations. I spent the extra money on the Kitchen Aid blender because I thought it would be well made.
